I bought this product solely based on the reviews, which is why I feel like I should write one of my own. I bought it to replace a broken dispenser. The cold water dispenser does dispense cool water, but the hot water dispenser is the part I have a problem with. I buy Sparkletts water, which has a nifty no-spill top feature. Instead of taking the red cap off the bottle, you just reveal a tab in the cap that is pierced by the dispenser when you put the bottle on. I didn't realize this, but the heating unit seems to be near the top of the dispenser, where the bottle itself rests, so it actually melted the red bottle cap while it was on the unit. The whole bottle tasted like plastic (which just can't be good for you). And yes, I don't keep the hot water off to save on my electrical bill and I like having a hot water dispenser, which is why I bought a hot/cold water dispenser in the first place.
Now I have my new bottle on without the switching the hot water on, and took the cap off first. But with the design of this dispenser, putting a bottle of water on it is REALLY difficult and I ended up spilling a large amount. I'll test the hot water switch when the bottle is closer to the end so I don't ruin the whole 5 gallons.
My final thought is that the water dispenses painfully slowly, which I think is because it doesn't allow enough air in at a time to keep the water flowing (think: vacuum). Who knows, maybe I have a broken dispenser.
UPDATE: It's May 31st and I still stick to my guns. I called Whynter to ask about this and it turns out that the heating unit will overheat if the water cooler isn't filled with enough water. This means that the unit doesn't allow enough water into the heating/cooling area, even though the water bottle is upside down on top of it. I have to continuously touch the top of the unit and if it seems too hot, I lift the bottle a little so that the water will flow into the unit. I also turn the hot water off when the bottle is only 1/4 full. All in all, a pain in the butt. It takes forever to fill a glass of water, and I spill a large amount of water every time I put a new bottle on. On the plus side, the floor around my water cooler gets mopped every few weeks, but... Not worth the $160!
