The lid stays closed really well. I haven't checked but it seems like there is a magnet or small weight in the mouth to make it come down. Works better than my frog hamper I received as a gift 4 years ago. I love it...adorable!

Here's a laundry hamper from WHITNEY DESIGN(#2200) with "real" character - Lester "The Laundry Eating Lion" character. Made from durable nylon with a wire frame, this hamper literally "springs" open, has a lid designed to look like a lion, and would make a perfect addition to any kids room. In the open position, it is 18" in diameter and 22" high.
