Customer Review: Great tool if used properly

I purchased one of these a while back and absolutely love it. I make Chili and I use celery, onions, bell peppers (red, green, yellow)in the making of my masterpiece. I hate cutting all of those items into small consistent sized pieces. I've tried through the years to cut them by hand, and by numerous different types of cutters, choppers and food processors. Each item failed to get the desired result, but the hand chopping was always the fallback. It was a pain to hand cut all of those items - it would sometimes take me upwards of 30-40 minutes just to cut what I needed for one batch, but hand cutting was the only option that I had for the desired results (and usually I wasn't too good at it). I saw this one one of it's infomercials and thought I'd give it a try. It works great. You can't "chop" a whole onion through it at one time, but you can cut half of an onion with no problem (or if it's a big onion, you might need to quarter it) and it's easy to cut an onion in half or quarter before sending it through this device.
The bottom line is this, I can prepare all of the veggies for my chili in about 10 minutes (without sore hands and wrists) rather than taking the 30 or more minutes doing it by hand and trying to get the slices just the right size. The time consuming part of doing this by hand it trying to get the pieces a consistent size. When using this device, all of the pieces are consistent in size and are perfect for my needs. If you only need to chop a single item, this might be more trouble than it's worth getting it out and then cleaning if after use, but when using it for a sizable number of veggies. like I do, it's well worth the time of getting it out and then cleaning. It only takes about 3 or 4 minutes to clean (if that).
The key to making this gadget work right is to use a hard quick push on the "lid" rather than trying to slowly push down on the lid to get the items through the blades. If you use a quick and hard push, it works just like it does on TV. All of the onion, bell pepper, etc will go through the blades and nothing is left behind if done properly. (I've read some of the other reviews and some of the folks find it too hard to push down on - I haven't found that to be the case). I haven't used this brick cheese, but I would guess that it wouldn't work to well for something like that. I've used it on Tomatoes as well and the results were excellent as long as the tomato was firm and not over ripe. Again, a quick hard push works better than slowly applying increasing pressure. It's more like swinging clever at the onion (hard quick push) rather than sawing at it with a dull knife (slow pressure).
All I can say is that for what I use this for, it works perfect and I've been looking for the perfect device for over 20 years. I've used those hand slicers, and "choppers" (from the kind that you hit on the top to the kind that you crank to "make salsa") from places like Popeil and have even tried an expensive food processor to try to get the desired results. They haven't worked for what I needed. This did. I like it and I've been using it for over 2 years now and it still works fine (I will admit that I don't use it everyday, but it has held up quite well). I figure that if it breaks, I'll just get another one but I doubt that I'll be having to replace it soon. This one seems very sturdy. If I were to replace it, it would more likely be to get a bigger one with a bigger "basket".
