I've only cooked with this knife a few times so far, but it has been perfect for my needs: Chopping and slicing apples, potatoes, carrots, and celery, mincing garlic, and slicing bread. The only thing it hasn't worked well on is slicing soft, firm cheese like Swiss, because the blade sticks--but that's really not what the knife is for. (I should invest in a wire cheese slicer.)
As a beginner, it's important to me that the knife is low-maintenance, versatile (to reduce the number of implements I need), and relatively safe. It is all of these.
The knife could *probably* be sharper, but I would be more nervous using it. As it is, the blade simply slides through every fruit, vegetable, and loaf I've tried it on.

I didn't pay that much for it so I wasn't expecting good quality. But I got good quality. This knife stays sharp for a long time after you hone it. I use it for almost everything, except for when I really do need to use a paring knife. I used to always cry while cutting onions, but with this knife I can cut one and a half, maybe two whole onions before my eyes start to sting (sharp, good quality knives = no tears; dull, crappy knives = crying like a baby). I recommend this knife to everyone, unless you're a hardcore chef who insists on spending a good deal of money for a serious knife. Otherwise, if you're like me (i.e., someone who enjoys cooking and who cooks around three or four times a week for two people or three) then get this.

This knife is so far beyond awesome, it is literally almost not believable! I just ordered a second one, because the cost is basically $22 (since with free shipping and no tax, the $29 price becomes net, just around $22).
I have several German kitchen knives and other expensive knives, and all WERE top of the line just a few years ago, but this Swiss knife is lightweight, perfectly balanced, and (watch out) sharp enough to make you careful when using it, and it is an unbelievable value, with unbelievable quality.
I'm not trying to hype it, I'm just wondering how the U.S. can ever compete in world markets, with even the Swiss providing this Chinese kind of price, with Swiss quality. I am in awe...
Customer Review: The Test Kitchen is right Summary: 5 Stars
I originally tried this knife after reading the review in Cook's Illustrated. I have several heavier, full tang chef's knives that I always thought felt good in my hand. Surprisingly, this lighter weight, 3/4 tang model felt so comfortable that I started buying them for all my knife-ignorant friends and relatives (you know, the ones that don't know that a dull knife is more dangerous than a very sharp one).
Along with each gift came a little bit of advice as to how to store and maintain the knife. Even though it can probably withstand the dishwasher better than most knives, I still recommend against it.
With a price like this, how can you beat it. Also, it holds an edge much better than my other knives.

This is the second one I've purchased and expect to get more soon. Restaurant use requires a good knife that works well, feels good, and can hold up to plenty of wear. This one does it all. Cook's Illustrated says it better, and they are the reason why I got this one, it's perfect weight and cuts really well. Can't beat the price too. Now my sister wants one after using mine so, she's getting it for Christmas with the recommended sharpener. I expect that the more people actually help me prepare food, the more I'll "sell" or will be getting for gifts for them. A must as it sharpens great and costs a fraction of the higher end ones that don't necessarily work as well, for all their "features." Perfect for the overload mine sees.
