The packaging states that these filters should be replaced every 2-4 weeks, and I've found that every 3 weeks is about right for my three dogs with the pump speed right in the middle.
Also - and this is more a review of the fountain than the filters - the fountain has had the intended effect of motivating my dogs to drink more water.

I have 4 dogs and 2 cats and use the Big Dog fountain. This filter with the charcoal separated seems to work much better, and a bit longer than the old filter. I've had my fountain for over a year, and we go through a LOT of water. I clean the unit every two weeks and rinse the filter several times until it looks too dirty to re-use.Customer Review: Pet drinking fountain (Platinum)

My 2 cats absolutely love it. At first they had to examine it as cats do before they started drinking from it and now I can see that they drink enough water every day as well.
I even caught both of them drinking from it at the same time. When you're thirsty, you're thirsty.

An excellent filter that does a wonderful job keeping the water your pets drink pure. These filters clean up well and can be used for an extended period if necessary. So far the filter has been in unit for 3 months. I do empty the fountain each time the water tank runs empty, and wipe it clean. This will make your filters last longer. So far no slime at all in water bowl. A regular water bowl would be slimey in one day. this filter works great.
