Customer Review: Nice idea, flawed execution

The biggest problem with over-the-door hanger systems like this is the amount of gap available between the top of the door and the header of the door frame. Unfortunately with the Umbra, the thickness of the two support brackets it uses requires a sizable amount space in order for the door to close properly, one that forces me to shave down the top of three doors in order to get the Umbra to hang and still allow the door to close and latch properly (I had ordered three of these). Moreover, the curved arms on the brackets protrude away from the door so much that it's impossible to use on the inside face of an outswinging door, simply because the stop at the head of the door frame gets in the way. So on a closet door that swings into a bedroom, the hanger has to be located on the bedroom side of the door, unless further modifications are made to the door frame (like carving out slots in the stop, or removing the head stop altogether).
In addition, Umbra uses a self-adhesive felt-like black liner that's adhered to the sides of the brackets that come in contact with the door, presumably to protect the door finish from being scratched or damaged by the bracket, and perhaps make for a more snug fit. Nice idea, but unfortunately this material has a nasty habit of peeling up and sticking itself to the door rather than to the bracket. If you have to reposition the hanger, or remove it as I did after I found out how badly it didn't fit, you can be left with an unsightly, sticky mess on the faces of your door. And as I discovered it's a mess that's rather difficult to completely remove.
For all of the hassle, the build quality of the Umbra seemed rather marginal to me. The hanger bar itself is nicely stout in thickness, but the brackets--for all of their intrusiveness on the door and frame--seem rather flimsy; there's a lot of flex to the metal straps that make up each bracket. These might sit better over the door had we had simple, flat surfaced doors...but we don't. There were no caveats provided in the product description; with the sort of recessed paneled doors we have the brackets flex and have a bit of flop to them, and do make it seem like we shouldn't be considering hanging heavy winter gear or anything comparable in weight on the assembly.
At this point all I can say is that the Umbra valet is a good idea backed by poor product development and fabrication. I never imagined it would create so much work for me in order for us to keep the doors we intended the valet to hang on working as they're supposed to. Still, they do give us additional hanging space, and that's not a bad thing. But with a little more forethought and design execution, the Umbra valet could work far better right out of the box.
