Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Tovolo Silicone Spatula, Blue

Customer Review: Started out great, now decomposing!
Summary: 2 Stars

I agree with some of the other reviewers. I bought this based on the CI recommendation. It initially is nice, with the right level of firmness and shape to the blade, but after a few months, pieces of the silicone start breaking off in little chunks on the edges. Not cool. It now looks like a rat attacked my spatula for lunch. It has only been handwashed. Find another spatula unless you want to replace this one every few months.

Customer Review: Disappointing
Summary: 2 Stars

I was very excited to use this spatula as it was recommended by Cook's Illustrated and it worked well for a few months. The weight and design are wonderful, however, both of the ones I have bought now have nics and chips on the tip and are no longer usable for fear of pieces falling into the batter or dough. As much as I like them, I would not recommend them.

Customer Review: too heavy
Summary: 2 Stars

choose this brand for the lower price. Seems well made but had to return. The handle is too heavy for what I use this item for. I replaced it with the Rubbermade brand.

Customer Review: Started off great, but fell apart
Summary: 1 Stars

I loved this spatula when I first got it, but over a few months, I began noticing its problems, and before too long, it started falling apart--literally. The first problem I had with this is that the handle conducts heat all too well. I was aware of this when I bought it, so I'm not factoring it into my rating, but be aware that if you leave this in a pot of hot food, the handle will get burning hot.

The main problem started developing 3-4 months after I bought it. At first, a tiny speck broke off the corner. Over the next few weeks, I'd notice little blue specks in my food, and finally large chunks started coming off and cracks were visible. At this price, I certainly would not recommend this product given its short lifespan. I've read at least one other review noting this problem, so it seems it's not just a fluke. I'd stay away.

UPDATE 11/01/2010:
After posting my original review, I contacted the manufacturer to let them know about the problem. They told me the problem with my spatula was due to a manufacturing problem that they've since fixed. They also offered to send me a free replacement spatula, which I accepted.

My review of the second, supposedly improved, spatula reads exactly like my review of the original. It was perfect for the first few months, then slowly it started flaking off, cracking, and disintegrating. Finally, this gradual process snowballed and, because I don't like specks of silicone in my food, the spatula soon became completely unusable. Just like its predecessor, this spatula ended up in the trash.

I've only used two products from this manufacturer, both made of silicone, and both of them have been complete disappointments. Although I truly appreciate their customer service department sending me a free replacement and attempting to resolve the problem, it turns out that the replacement spatula only reinforced my negative opinion of this company's products and their quality.

Customer Review: from 5 stars to 1 star
Summary: 1 Stars

Like a few others before me, I picked this item because of its recommendation from cooks illustrated, and was extremely happy with its shape and function. But, mine too has started falling apart. The tip of my spatula has rips and chunks missing which I only hope wound up in the dishwasher instead of my food. I know I'm abusive with my kitchen tools, but I purchased a set of Pinzon silicone spatulas months before this one and they have stood up to the exact same conditions and show absolutely no wear. Even though I enjoy using my Tovolo much more... I can't recommend anyone purchasing this item.
