Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Tovolo Silicone Spatula, BlueCustomer Review: It's a diva: Looks flashy, costs a lot, but incredibly needy Summary: 3 Stars
Like others have said, it's a comfortable handle, the weight is great, the head scrapes well (although it's a bit thicker in the middle, making for a bit of trouble getting everything off it in one swipe), and the razor-thin edge gets every last bit of whatever it is you're scraping. And it really is a sweet-looking design.
But that razor-thin edge has to be babied or you'll chip bits off. I did it once while mixing scotcheroos (~rice crispies treats), and routinely by sticking it in the dishwasher. I emailed Tovolo and got a brand new head to replace that one...which I then also proceeded to chip by just nicking the blade in my food processor.
In the end, it feels overpriced. Cool idea, but I can't be fussing over a spatula this much. Try the Rubbermaid Professional 13 1/2" Heat Resistant Scraper with the red handle if you want to pay a lot for a spatula, but one that stands up to normal use much better.
Customer Review: A couple of minor flaws Summary: 3 Stars
Terrific, with 2 small caveats:
1. Its heft is nice, but the handle is so heavy that the thing feels a bit out of balance to me.
2. Its edge has suffered a small cut or tear, perhaps from being put in the dishwasher next to a knife(?) Too bad it couldn't be tougher and more resistant to a bit of abuse.
Other than that, great (so far). Even with its faults, it's my favorite spatula.
Customer Review: Little chunks of it are falling off. Summary: 3 Stars
After about a month of use, little chunks of silicone are breaking off of the edge of this spatula into the food. Metal handle is nice, little chunks of blue silicone in food, not so much.
Customer Review: Great expectations - disappointing results Summary: 2 Stars
I had great expectations for this spatula: metal handle, silicone head - I felt the combination would be easy to clean and maintain, and truly heat-proof.
My expectations were mostly realized. The limitation I had not realized was that the head was quite a bit smaller than expected, and that, because of its softness, it was not quite as easy to handle material as I thought it would be. Overall, however, it had quite some value.
Unfortunately, the head started falling apart within 5-6 months of purchase. After 1.5 years of very episodic use, I took it off of my frequently used set. I finally threw it away today. In the end it did not work out for me. Not recommended.
Customer Review: Started great, now falling apart Summary: 2 Stars
I've had this spatula for 3 months, and use it often for both cold and hot foods. I like the shape, weight, and design. However, today when I was mixing flour and water into a sourdough starter, a piece of the tip broke off.
I usually hand wash the item, and have not used it at temperatures anywhere near the rated maximum.
I thought that since the blade separates easily from the handle, I might get a replacement blade. I went to the Tovolo website, and did not see such an item. Nor can I find one on Google. I also read that Tovolo does not offer direct refunds or replacements. Disappointing.
