Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Tovolo Red Silicone SpatulaCustomer Review: Disappointing Spatula Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this spatula because it was recommended by America's Test Kitchen and was initially impressed with its performance. The spatula has very thin edges allowing it to cleanly scrap a bowl, however the thin edges are the spatula's biggest weakness. After only a few uses the edges of the spatula were torn and small pieces of the edges were breaking off. I purchased two of these and both had the same problem after a short amount of use. If you are looking for a good spatula that will last and not disappoint, consider the rubbermaid professional scraper instead.
Customer Review: Sharp silicon edge, great if it had lasted - not durable! Summary: 1 Stars
Like many other reviewers, I bought this spatula with high hopes based on the Cook's Illustrated review of the product. The first few uses were great, the edge is so sharp you can scrape a bowl completely clean. I took special care and hand washed it after each use. Within a week (less than 4 uses) I noticed that the edge started cracking. I used it a few more times before pieces starting breaking off. This spatula is not worth the money. I've had other less expensive silicon spatulas, that while the edges are not as sharp, have lasted years, not weeks.
Customer Review: Piece of junk utensil Summary: 1 Stars
This is the worst silicone spatula we have ever owned. It began chipping off into the food I was stirring a little over a month after we got it. I've never had a silicone spatula even split with lots of use. I saw a poor review like this before I bought this one, but so many of the other reviews were stellar, that I ignored the bad one. I don't have any idea how other people have fared well with this utensil. The stainless steel handle lured me in to the idea that it was good looking and durable. Unfortunately for me, it was a solid waste of $10.
Customer Review: Big pass. Summary: 1 Stars
The spatula end itself is very pliable and thin on the edge, which makes it pretty much useless for stirring anything except liquids. Worse, after a period of months, it decided to break off small pieces in a stew I was stirring. The two-piece design makes it difficult to clean. And it smells terrible - there's a rubbery smell that tastes even worse, and I can't imagine it's not transferring some of that bitter taste to the food.
I got a sturdy one-piece silicon spatula (coated all around) to replace it, and it's working so much better.
Customer Review: very disappointed Summary: 1 Stars
I really wanted to like this thing. Friends had touted them, so I got one. It worked good the first few times I used it, then the edge started coming off in little chunks. Now it looks like mice have been nibbling on the edge, it's totally unuseable. The worst was when I was stirring gumbo with it, and had to keep picking little red specks of silicone out of the food. I dont think I abused it, just used it for its intended purpose. Otherwise, I did like it...maybe if you dont use it in hot pans, but it's spozed to be good to 600 degrees...
