Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Tovolo Groovy Ice Pop Molds, Set of 6, YellowCustomer Review: Fun for all, as long as you don't drop them. Summary: 4 Stars
I bought these pop molds last summer. My kids love ices, but I couldn't bring myself to spend money on colored liquid sugar sold in stores. I bought different set of molds before, but they were cheaply made and we barely used them. These looked a bit too expensive for popsicle molds given that the previous ones were bought for a dollar or two, but I gave these a try and do not regret at all. These are great! They are very sturdy, well made, they collect juice once it starts melting (one should avoid tilting it any way), pops easily slide off after about a minute out of the freezer and the molds are attractive. We have reduced our consumption of ice cream and have been eating these almost daily during summer's hot days. There are a few cons, but they are not major: 1) the size is definitely too big for small children, my children actually finish their ices, but I am not necessarily happy about that, 2) they could take up some space in the freezer, but not an awful lot though. That's pretty much it. Do you have to buy expensive molds? Maybe not, but in my case cheap ones didn't work and these did. And we love them and plan on using for a while.
Update: Two weeks into using them this year, one mold cracked in the middle and in another one the piece that allows the mold to attach to base broke off. Both incidents are the result of the frozen mold falling on the tile floor. Nevertheless, both are unusable. So I am lowering my rating from 5 stars to 4.
Customer Review: Great product; one flaw Summary: 4 Stars
For some reason this summer popsicles began to appeal to me. Now I am no longer a child (not for a long time), but the combination of cold and delicious sounded so good. I looked around the store only to see that even the "fruit" popsicles were full of god-knows-what ingredients and unacceptable amounts of sugar. So I bought this after looking at several designs. What appealed to me was the shape and the bottom part of the holder that would capture an errant drips.
It was that holder that turned out to be the factor that annoys me. It does indeed catch drips and does it very well. But it also makes eating the bottom part of the popsicle difficult enough to be nearly impossible without spilling the liquid on yourself. If the "cup" at the bottom was wider or not as high it might work better. But trying to get your tongue in between the stick and the cup is annoying. (Maybe kids won't fret this; they are not the ones doing the laundry, after all. But for an adult it is a major annoyance.) One way to solve that, I guess is to keep the liquid you pour in less than usual. Then you'd have more room between the cup and the end of the stick.
Oh, and as a treat try water. Water "popsicles, especially with a little lemon juice in them, are superb!
Customer Review: Great for home made ice pops Summary: 4 Stars
I like to eat frozen juice bars, but they are expensive compared to regular popsicles, so I decided to buy a set of these molds and make them myself. The base tray is great as it holds the molds securely upright, and the popsicle "stick" has a drip tray top that serves as a cap, which also centers the stick in the mold.
I made some frozen grape juice and they turned out great--no need to ever buy juice bars again. Make sure you freeze them long enough--I was impatient and tried it after 3 hours and it just broke apart. So I left it in the freezer overnight. Just run some warm water over the mold and they slide right out.
The drip tray is a little annoying, but if you make sure you leave an inch of space when you are filling up the mold, it generally won't get in the way when you're eating the popsicle.
Customer Review: Great frozen pop molds Summary: 4 Stars
I'm impressed with the Tovolo Yellow Groovy Pop Molds. The plastic is very sturdy & the pops release easily by running under hot water for a few seconds. I like the individual molds, the fit is snug while waiting for freezing & may be eaten one at a time without having to unmold the entire tray as with other products. The handle is easy to grip, they are easy to eat, except when you get to the bottom. It's challenging getting your mouth around the last inch or so or the pop. I solved this however, by not filling the mold to the top. I do wish the molds were a bit smaller. The Tovolo pop is 4 oz, while store bought pops are 1.65 oz. I would recommend this product.
Customer Review: Great popsicle mold.......quite large though Summary: 4 Stars
The best thing about these molds is that you can do them individually. They are quite large though, so be prepared for that. I don't like the drip guard cause it doesn't work. The melting liquid just accumulates in their and then spills all over you when you tilt the popsicle to eat it. Other than that I think they are nice. Fit in their slots perfectly and steadily. No spilling and really nice to take them out individually and replace with a newly filled one easily.
I think I am going to try to leave more room when filling to allow tongue to get under the popsicle to catch the drips though. That's the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars.
