When I ordered this to try out I didn't realize it came with a handy dandy food holder attachment that just clips on and allows you to slide your food item up and down the microplane without grating your fingers in the process. This thing works great and I appreciated not having torn fingers in the process.
So far I have done lemon zest, ginger and garlic with it. It hasn't rusted, but I also hand wash this item. Looks like it would work really great with hard cheeses like parmesan.
The only down sides is that because of the food holder attachment you will wind up with a very small piece of whatever ungrated and the food holder would be difficult to hand clean if it got very messy...some very tight spaces on the holder to try to clean that will require a brush to get to if not using a dishwashing machine.
