Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Thermos Stainless-Steel 22-Ounce Leak-Proof Hydration BottleCustomer Review: I love this bottle. Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this bottle now for several years. I just love it. It keeps drinks cold for an amazingly long time. I once left it in my car for a weekend during the summer, sitting in the hot baking sun for 2 days, and when I finally went and got it the water was still slightly cool - the ice had of course melted by then, but the plastic (disposable) water bottle that was also in my car felt HOT to the touch. Amazing! It is also very rugged.. I've dropped this thing more times than I can count. I have a few tiny dings/dents in the metal, but it doesn't effect anything. The lid is made of plastic and probably more vulnerable to breakage, but I've been lucky so far as it hasn't fallen on its lid.
The lid is wonderful. The drinking spout is protected under a cover so it does not get dirt on it.. also, it has a nice big opening. It is very comfortable to drink out of. The button for opening the lid does not require that much pressure to click closed, or to press open -- this is good for someone like my mom, who has arthritis in her fingers. When you do press it open, it kind of springs open by itself, making it very easy to use with only one hand. There is a metal loop thing around the button that you can close to prevent the button from accidentally being pressed.
When open, the lid stays out of the way -- if you push it all the way open it sort of clicks into place (it doesn't really click, but I don't know how else to describe it), but I don't normally do that, and I've still never had the lid close on me while I was drinking out of the bottle.
Also, as long as the rubber gasket/ring thing is in place on the inside of the lid (where you screw it on), it DOES NOT LEAK. Not a single drop. When the lid clicks closed, it is sealed.
Cons:
-It's pretty heavy, even with nothing in it. I think it's worth it to have cold water ALL DAY though.
-If you wash the lid in the dishwasher, the rubber ring inside is likely to come off, and it blends in so well with our white dishwasher that it is often very hard for me to find. Now, I take the ring out before putting the lid in the dishwasher and I just wash that part by hand. Actually, I usually wash the whole bottle by hand since I want to use it ALL the time, and I don't want to wait for the dishwasher to run. I only use it for water, and I'm the only one who drinks from it, so I do not wash it every day. Maybe every 4 or 5 days.
-I did have some problems with the lid that came with it. It was defective, after only a few months the plastic button started breaking off the lid (and this was before I ever dropped it). I wrote to the company to complain about it, and they replied that if I sent them my address they would send me a new lid. They did! I didn't have to pay for shipping, and I didn't have to send the old lid back to prove that it was broken. I really like this!
Customer Review: Ice cubes the next day, yeah! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this water bottle to keep my water cold and after trying many other drinkers, I saw this Hydration Bottle by Thermos. I was looking for a drinker or bottle that had a CHUG style opening, no baby rubber straws that flip up, or inside straws that fall off when you add ice, I wanted something that would give me water on the spot and was easy to load with regular sized ice cubes without cramming them down with the pick action of a spoon handle. I also wanted something sturdy, a bottle that could withstand a direct drop onto a concrete driveway when my water bottle falls off the floor of my truck and out onto the concrete. First, let me tell you...this gem keeps your water freezing cold more than a day long! I still have ice cubes the next day! Also, this awesome water bottle holds enough water to satisfy me much longer than those wimpy kindergarten 12 ouncers. I don't like to run out of water, I live in the desert! The bottom has a rubberized base to eliminate scooting and also offer some protection from drops. Also, it's completely spill, drip, and leak proof, absolutely! The super cool push button flip open lid gives you instant clearance to chug a gulp of water, this is particularly nice when you're driving and you don't have an extra hand! The surface of this hydration bottle stays condensation free, no wet hands! I fill this every morning and don't leave home without it, I like having water with me all the time but am picky about quality water, so I take my filtered water, no thanks Aquafina bottle water, I'll bottle my own for free. I love this product, If it ever breaks, I'll buy this same one again!
A NOTE: This hydration bottle would be perfect for carrying baby formula in, especially if you're traveling, on vacation, on a plane trip, going to be away from home all day. Your formula would be plenty warm and ready to fill more than one bottle. The hydration bottle would relieve your worry of spoiling your formula or needing to find hot water quickly somewhere to mix your formula! I wish I'd had this when I was a new mom!
RECOMMENDED
Another note: 2 years later, the latch on the pop up screw on cap broke, and the Coleman product support doesn't carry replacement caps for this model anymore. They do offer a new model of this same Hydration bottle, called E2 I believe, same great features, and best yet, fits into most standard auto cup holders!!!! The older model did not.
Customer Review: Great Bottle, bigger than expected Summary: 5 Stars
I have had the thermos for a little over two weeks. I was surprised to find how large it actually is. The bottom is a hard plastic like the top and not soft rubber like I have found with other similar bottles. The top part of the bottle has a big opening for your mouth. I have done some stress testing on the bottle to make sure it was leak proof as I attach it to my backpack daily at school and plan to use it while hiking. The bottom plastic protected the steel shell when dropped multiple times onto rock, cement, pavement, etc. It hit the ground and showed no signs of stress each time. The top of the bottle also hit the ground and showed no signs of stress. With other bottles that I have owned in the past, the top of the bottle would break from a fall. This includes my trusty Nalgenes of which I have owned quite a few.
As for the liquid temperature, I put two cubes of ice in the top and filled it with cold water at about 7am and left it out in the 90 degree heat last week for about 12 hours. When I returned and opened the canister, the ice was still in the bottle! Quite impressed with this result as the canister itself was hot to the touch.
Of very minor complaint is the size of the opening for the clip being to small for a decent size clip for my backpack. This is of minor complaint as attaching one clip to another is an easy and acceptable fix.
Also of note, a lot of people have asked me about the bottle as they wondered what I could be keeping inside. I have tried soft drinks, coffee, energy drinks, water, milk and all of them have kept well. I would not recommend milk though, as even though it stays cold it just feels strange coming out of the thermos.
Cleanup is a breeze as the bottle is steel and does not retain residue very often. I would not recommend using this as a coffee thermos as that is not what it was intended for. It is very clear that it should be used primarily as a cold beverage holder. I did try coffee as noted above and it did stay warm, but again, coffee stains everything so I would stick to the cokes and water that it's used to.
All in all I would recommend this product over the myriad of plastic solutions if you are considering getting a high quality steel container for your summer beverage needs.
Customer Review: Great Hydration Bottle! It helps me stay well hydrated! Summary: 5 Stars
I got this bottle to replace my smaller 18 oz thermos nissan bottle that I accidentally left somewhere. Since I really liked the 18oz bottle, I thought I'd go with the same brand and style but upgrade to something larger. This product has not dissapointed. It has the same great features as the 18oz version, with some additional upgrades.
What I like:
It's stainless steel! After losing my previous thermos bottle, I had to go back to a plastic nalgene for a while, and man did I notice a difference in the taste of the water. Water tastes SO MUCH BETTER in stainless steel, and so I end up drinking a lot more, which helps me stay much more hydrated.
The flip-top lid, which allows for convenient one-handed drinking.
The generously sized pour spout, which allows me to take large swigs of water without much effort.
The rubbery plastic bottom which prevents scratching the surface you place the bottle on, helps make it more stable, and protects the bottom from being dented when dropped (something I did several times to my 18oz version).
The attached carabiner, which provides something to hang on to when carrying the bottle.
1/2 cup additional capacity (over the 18oz version).
And of course, the sweat-free design and excellent insulation.
What I don't like:
Because of the larger capacity, this bottle is more unwieldy than the 18oz version. In fact, if Thermos hadn't put a carabiner on this bottle, I would have had a difficult time hanging on to it.
Because of the space the insulation takes up, there still isn't near as much room for liquids as in a comparably sized nalgene bottle, and I end up having to make more fill-ups.
Despite these two minor issues, I give this product a hearty two thumbs up, and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a hydration bottle that keeps their water cold, easily accessible, and tasting fresh for an extended period of time.
Customer Review: Better choice for a man Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this Thermos for my husband, who wanted something larger than the 18-oz Thermos hydration bottle (which I consider as my BEST EVER Amazon purchase). My husband likes the capacity of this bottle better and finds that he does not have to refill water as often. As I said in the title, this is a great bottle for a man, hence the five stars, as it retains ice and cold water ridiculously well, and it does not sweat, leak, leave rings on table, or get your stuff wet from condensation if you throw it into your backpack (unlike a Nalgene or Camelbak).
For me, this bottle is a little awkward to handle, as it is bigger in circumference than the 18-oz bottle, and I couldn't find a natural place to grip the bottle, except the carabiner (which my husband has removed, so he does not have a problem with gripping the bottle). Unlike the 18-oz, this bottle does not fit into any of our car cup holders, so you'll have to find a resting place for it while you drive. When you look down into the bottle, there seems to be a couple of centimeters extra for insulation, which makes for the larger diameter, which I don't find with the 18-oz version.
All in all, my husband is thrilled with the extra water capacity, and I continue to be thrilled by the Thermos quality. So glad that we don't buy bottled water any more and contribute to the landfill, do not have to worry about BPA since it's stainless steel, and do not have to worry about the ice melting faster than we can drink. Seriously - I fill this puppy up at night with ice and water, so I don't have to rush in the morning. The ice is still there 24 hours later!
