Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Thermos Nissan FBB1000 34-Ounce Stainless-Steel Vacuum Insulated Briefcase BottleCustomer Review: You can't beat it, but you can beat with it. Summary: 5 Stars
Convenient. Hardy. Simple. Clean. I'd almost call it elegant. I've used this item every day for more than 8 months.
You can't go wrong with the Thermos branded Nissan bottle. Their vacuum seal is for real, I read the patent and everything (They managed to automate the brazing process in a vacuum furnace, driving the price way down, hopefully no jobs were lost, as someone must still operate the furnace... right?). I am about to purchase the 61 ounce version, as I love my 34 ounce Thermos, but I drink more tea in a day than it can provide in a day. You will not be disappointed by this product.
According to my Pyrex measuring thing I use for steeping, 34 oz is roughly equivalent to four and a quarter cups. I brew five cups at a time, a fairly standard amount for a kettle, so that's enough for a cup after brewing, and a completely full Thermos to take with you. I purchased this thing in early November of last year (2009), and it's been dropped, dented, and used to beat several would-be attackers, but it still retains the essential vacuum. Items in my possession do not last long unless they are made well, and this one definitely fits that bill. I look forward to my purchase of the 61 oz. version, I know I will not be let down. Also, if you need to clean it, I recommend a mix of vinegar, baking soda, and a handful of pebbles. (I'm not kidding about the pebbles. The smaller, the better) DO NOT USE BLEACH, it's bad for stainless steel, and I've been told that it can weaken the braze.
Cleaning Clarification:
Remove the rubber grommet from the stopper before mixing the vinegar and baking soda, as the reaction between the sodium bicarbonate and vinegar will release a lot of CO2, and could possibly create a dangerous situation, (remember the volcanoes we used to make as kids?) You can tighten the stopper and still be able to shake it around with minimal leakage once the grommet is removed, though I recommend you do this over a basin just to be safe. The pebbles will destroy any remnants of caked-on coffee and/or tea residue, I guarantee! I grew accustomed to looking into a black hole of matte-black liquid refreshment containment after 8 months of daily use, and was nearly blinded by the shiny stainless steel gleam after the cleaning process was complete. The vinegar and baking soda may not be necessary, but I haven't tried cleaning with only pebbles just yet. Ask me in another 8 months!
Customer Review: A Must Buy Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great thermos that I have been using pretty much daily. I originally bought it due to not drinking enough water so I wanted to drink more on my way to work. Though did not want to deal with either taking my own glass, or a disposable one in the car, and also worry about it spilling. So I looked around and bought this one from amazon.
Its stainless steel and has been dropped a few times by me but still no noticeable dents or scratches. The top unscrews and can be used as a cup but I tend to just drink straight from the thermos itself. Then inside you have a plastic and rubber thing that screws in and creates the vacuum seal.
For keeping things cool, it works amazing. I filled it up with the water I keep in my fridge. Went to the park and walked around. After about 3 or 4 hours of it sitting in my car, in the sun, in mid summer in hot Florida the water inside was still just as cool as if I had pulled it out of the fridge. It seems to keep temperature about 24 hours give or take.
I have not tried anything hot as I pretty much just drink cold drinks, and don't eat soups.
I have used it to grab some water for on the way to work, put something in it for trips as well and also fill it up at stops on trips so that I have something in the car. Have even used it to drink out of at home sometimes as it holds a decent amount and keeps things cool even when you have unscrewed the top.
Currently I'm thinking of buying the larger model just for when I go play basketball so I have more water to drink afterward. This model is for drinking liquids on a normal pace. Though I will continue to use this one as well as it works so great and looks so nice.
My only issue I ever had with it is my own stupidity. There have been a couple of times I forgot to screw in the plastic/rubber stopper and just screwed on the metal cup lid. While nothing came out when the cup was on due to it having a great seal as well, when I opened it there was some water that came out. Though this is just from me being stupid and not putting in the stopper screw. So more of a warning to people of what not to do.
I would recommend anybody getting this as you can use it no matter if just drive to work every day, go on trips, or even stay around the house.
Customer Review: Used for school Summary: 5 Stars
College student perspective:
Bottom size: Larger diameter than a 20oz Mt Dew so it won't fit on the side of my backpack; however, it will fit inside of it perfect along side books!
Height: Fits great in a backpack or messenger bag. I don't own a briefcase so I can't comment on that.....
Volume: It holds what it says it does and very well at that. It's enough to keep me satisfied for a few hours. When it says do not put carbonated beverage in there it means it.
Hot beverage: I keep tea inside the thermos so the water is just below boiling point. Within the first 4 hours it stays the same temperature. After 8 it held 80% of the original temperature. 12 hours later still really warm.
Cold beverage: Filled it with ice and then water before bed because I like having something to drink. By the morning most of the ice was gone but the drink was still cold.
Cleaning: A little dawn soap plus warm water cleans it out really well. Tea was left in it overnight, by accident, and left a tea-colored tint inside with the light smell. Washing according to directions removed the tint inside as well as the smell and did not taint any future drinks.
Dropping the container: It happens. No dents yet; although, it was dropped from a low height and on grass and dirt. The outside cleans up really well.
Seals: Top seals well and doesn't let much air out or in which is why putting carbonated soda in there is a bad idea. If the top is not shut all the way but the cup is sealed it will still leak every so slightly if it becomes tipped over. Just make sure the top is closed and you won't have to clean out your roommates car the next day because you forgot to close it the night before.
Dishwashing: Don't do that. It is possible to send it through a dishwasher even though it is not necessary to get it clean. Also, the heat and water pressure from a dishwasher carries the risk of messing up the vacuum in the thermos which is what keeps the drinks cold/hot.
Definitely a good buy! It won't fit where normal drink containers will but it does such a better job of keeping anything the right temperature all day long.
Customer Review: More than a thermos... A wise investment! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this thermos three months ago as a solution to my coffee-stain problem.
As a teacher, I have very little time during the day to run to the "faculty lounge" to replenish my morning coffee or to catch an after-lunch pick-me-up. So, over the years, I developed the habit of driving to work with three full insulated coffee cups (with lids): two I placed in my car's cup-holders, the third I held in my hand as I drove. Not very smart. Invariably, I ended up wearing some of my coffee.
But those days are over.
This Nissan thermos solved my coffee-stain problem. But it did even more. It solved another problem I never knew I had.
I had become so accustomed to the lukewarm and cold coffee that my "three go-cup method" yielded that I had forgotten how good a hot cup of coffee is in the late morning or early afternoon. I no longer have that problem. This Nissan thermos keeps my coffee piping hot throughout the day and into the night.
It is durable. Tall and thin, it fits easily in a backpack or briefcase. The vacuum insulation keeps the coffee inside the thermos (preventing further coffee-stains!). It also cleans easily. I wash it by hand nightly, using an elongated bottle-brush with soft bristles to clean the interior.
Purchasing this thermos was a wise investment for me. I happily recommend it to those who are tired of coffee-stains on their clothes and old, cold coffee in their cups.
Customer Review: This one works better than advertised Summary: 5 Stars
I have had other types of beverage containers that were supposed to keep their contents warm for long periods of time. I have one (not this one) that has trouble keeping tea warm enough to drink for an hour! But, this Thermos goes far beyond expectations.
The first time I used it, it blew me away. Seriously, here's what happened- I poured hot tea into the Thermos at 7:30 AM and forgot it on the counter when I left for work. And, based on experience with the other container I had been using, just knew it would be cold and lousy when I got home after 7 PM. But, I opened the top and steam was coming out! This is the truth- The tea was so hot after almost 12 hours, it was still too hot to drink!! Wow.
The trick with this Thermos is to not anticipate large heat losses through the day, so pour your beverage into it at whatever temperature you want to drink it. Don't make it hotter expecting it to get cold on you, it won't. If you like your tea at 150 degrees, make it 150 and when you open the Thermos to drink it at lunch time, it will still be 150 degrees. I don't know how this Thermos can retain heat and others cannot, but this one really works.
Absolutely the best thing I have ever purchased online in my life. For once, a product that not only lives up to the advertising claims, but exceeds them. THANK YOU!
TIP: Buy this one, don't buy whatever other one you're looking at.
