Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Thermos Nissan 48-Ounce Wide Mouth Stainless-Steel BottleCustomer Review: Exceeded my expectations Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this Thermos so we could take ice cream on camping trips, hopefully without buying expensive dry-ice. On receiving it I filled it with ice from the freezer without any pre-chilling and put it on the counter in our kitchen at around 70F. After 24 hours sitting the outside was cool but not cold, I shook the thermos and heard nothing, so I took a quick peek inside... it was still completely full of frozen ice. After 48 hours it was still full of ice but looked like the cubes had melted a little. After 72 hours, yes THREE DAYS, I opened it up and used the pouring spout to get ice cold water from the thermos. When I opened it up fully it was still 3/4 full of a solid block of ice. Let's just say I'm very impressed with the thermal insulation provided by this flask, with a 40F differential it held up extremely well!
Okay so our kitchen isn't at 90F like some of the campsites we go to in summer but my plan is to put it inside a regular cooler which we can usually keep at 40F or so when camping and still have it keep our frozen stuff frozen. In fact I might even buy another flask like this but I'm going to try it out first. The mouth also isn't as wide as I'd hoped so it will be a bit of a chore to pack ice-cream into it and somehow it just doesn't look as big as I thought, does this really hold 3 pints? I had to go get a measuring jug to check and you know what, it really does!
The top seems well designed with a pouring spout that works without opening the lid and a couple of cups built in. The handle and strap are also convenient for toting this around. All in all it may be an expensive thermos but it certainly seems to be well designed. As a physicist I can tell you is no difference between keeping stuff cold and keeping stuff hot BUT with ice you benefit from the very significant latent heat of fusion that keeps stuff cold as the ice melts (it takes 330 Joules to melt 1 gram of ice, but only 4 Joules to raise its temperature 1C after that) so I would not expect it to maintain a 40F positive temperature difference for three days, or ditto for chilled (but not frozen) liquid, far from it.
