Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Thermos Nissan 18-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Travel TumblerCustomer Review: Wish I'd bought one sooner Summary: 5 Stars
Simply put, what should be hot stays hot, what should be cold stays cold. This mug is so far an exceptional choice in terms of preserving temperature of any beverage. As I write at 3pm, my coffee that was poured at 10:15am is still pleasantly warm and tasty. Not scalding, but not even close to lukewarm either. The manufacturer rates hot beverages at 4 hours and based on my experience, their estimate is spot-on. I was previously a big fan of the former Starbuck's Extreme Tumbler, which has been discontinued for some time, and until now, I had yet to find any mug that was comperable in terms of keeping coffee hot for any length of time. I have to say - this Thermos Nissan mug exceeds the performance of said Starbucks mug by a mile, and is lighter, has a much better lid (particularly for cleaning), and the lack of a handle poses no disadvantage for me whatsoever. Leakproof? No. But the lid is very well-designed with a solid closure tab and a deep lip, such that any major bumps that cause any small amount of liquid to spill will be contained in the lid, versus dripping down the side of the mug and all over the car's cup holder. Over the few days I've used this mug, I've had no issues with spilling any coffee. My only regret is not purchasing one sooner.
Customer Review: Like going into battle with a bazooka in your hand! Summary: 5 Stars
Think about it . . .
If you were going into battle and you could choose to carry a BB gun or a bazooka, which one do you think would fill you with total confidence that you could prevail, regardless of what was waiting for you on the battlefield? Well if you're a serious coffe drinker, this my friend, is your bazooka.
I've been using my current Coffee Transportation Unit (a Thermos-Nissan 14 oz. leak-proof travel mug) for about 3 years now. Great mug, but a tad undersized. My "CDD" (Caffeine Delivery Device) needs to not ever run out in the heat of battle (or an average work day). So I ordered this "heavy weapon". Well it just arrived today and all I can say is HOO-RAH! I just loaded it and man do I feel invincible. Nothing can touch me now. This thing is big, solid, has a good "heft" to it, and will not run out of ammo in the middle of a fire-fight. I am untouchable!
That's what a big cylinder of mean-ass stainless steel filled with 18 ounces of hot lead (I mean strong java) will do for your self confidence. Did I mention that I am now untouchable?
You need one of these. Your confidence of getting through any situation will go through the roof. AWESOME!
Customer Review: Is this worth the money? A resounding YES! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a veterinary student, and have tried tons of different coffee tumblers. My biggest complaint with all of them is that they can't keep the coffee hot longer than an hour. And over time, the flavored creamer makes them have a funny taste that just won't come out. And I never liked how little they held. Maybe I drink more coffee than the average person, but 16 ounces doesn't seem to cut it.
Then I found this beautiful tumbler. The first day I tried it, I put coffee in it at 6:30, and at 11:00 it was still hot!! It stays hot until the very last sip. The lip is big enough that it slightly cools the coffee on the way to your lips if you blow on it. That's my biggest problem now - I burn my lips! But if that's the biggest problem, then there is no problem, because that's what it's meant to do.
I highly recommend this tumbler. It's expensive, but worth every cent. And it holds a generous 18 ounces, which is very nice. One thing of note - make sure you rinse it with hot water before putting your coffee in - makes a big difference in temperature. Also, it's not dishwasher safe but super easy to clean.
Customer Review: Keeps drinks warm for hours! Summary: 5 Stars
I once burnt my tongue on hot tea 2 1/2 hours after putting it in this travel mug. I think that just about says it all. :)
My only complaint is that it's not spill-proof, but it doesn't claim to be.
People have posted reviews complaining about stuff getting stuck between the walls of the mug and becoming gross or producing an odor. I had this problem very briefly when I first got it eight months ago. Then, I read the directions for care that came with it and realized it was my own stupid fault for not following directions. You have to let it sit upside-down after washing. There is a small hole in the bottom that allows moisture to evaporate from between the layers. If you don't put it upside down, the hole is covered, and there is no way for moisture to escape. When mine started getting the funky smell, I just soaked it in some warm, soapy water for a while and then left it to sit upside town for a few days to make sure there was none left trapped inside. (I knew it was completely dried out when I could no longer hear water sloshing around in there.) It's been fine ever since.
Customer Review: Best of class Summary: 5 Stars
I originally purchased one of the tumblers about 10 years ago and just recently misplaced it so this purchase is a replacement. After the original was lost, I experimented with several other aluminum tumblers that looked similar and cost less, and they were OK, but they just do not hold a candle to the insulating quality and durability of this model.
I read some negative reviews about this unit before I placed the order. I agree, the top plug (through which one drinks) is not designed to be water tight seal so that can sometimes present a problem, but that's a trade-off I'm more than willing to accept for the superior insulating qualities and general durability of the unit.
Another negative issue mentioned related to the rubber seal in the lid and it was never a problem for me in the old unit, but I am pretty picky about cleaning the the thing after I use it. I never had any mold build-up or foul smell. I can only speak for myself, but I suspect this is a case of folks not properly cleaning it after use. Sort of reminds me of the carpenter that blames his tools.
