Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Thermos Nissan 18-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Travel TumblerCustomer Review: Great Product Summary: 5 Stars
I have quite a collection of 'thermos type cups' and NONE of them would keep my coffee/tea hot for a prolonged period of time. I searched the Internet and looked at a good number of cups and read oodles of reviews. I found the 18 ounce Stainless steel Thermos from Nissan here at Amazon and it immediately caught my attention due to the amount of liquid it holds. 2-4 ounces may not seem like much but when you are driving a lot or in an extended meeting it is very satisfying to have the 'extra' drink there.
When I found this product I initially read all the negative reviews about the leaking etc first, weeding out those few that were totally negative and appeared to be more of a tantrum then a review. Then I read a sampling of the more positive reviews on the product. Nothing is perfect and barring any manufacturing errors this appeared to be what I was looking for and I did purchase the tumbler and am very glad that I did.
First, it does a very good job at keeping warm or hot liquids hot. I can fill it with coffee at 8 in the morning and still be drinking hot coffee after noon. Which is a real switch from the other insulated tumblers I had been using.
Secondly, as stated earlier it does hold a good helping of coffee or tea.
Thirdly, the thermos is spill proof and will not leak, if the top is put on properly. I did notice that the top was a bit fussy pertaining to being screwed down. You had to actually watch what you are doing or it will end up crooked and not do what it was designed to do and the contents will leak when you drink.
The only thing I would caution someone about is due to the product's increased volume capacity it IS taller than other products and will tip more easily if not secured properly in a moving vehicle. But common sense should tell one that much.
Overall I am very happy with the product and will recommend it to anyone.
Customer Review: Excellent, if expensive, travel mug Summary: 5 Stars
A great, simple mug: it holds plenty of coffee; it doesn't spill when drinking and driving; it keeps coffee hot for the few hours I'm drinking it; it cleans easily without leaving an aftertaste; it's easy and comfortable to hold and drink from.
The single thing that makes it worth the money for me is the heat retention. In my experience it keeps coffee hot much longer than the $10-15 travel mugs you can get at places like Target. Those are what I've used for years, and I finally decided to try the more expensive one. I think it's worth the extra expense.
Every weekday morning I pour in 18 oz. of hot coffee at about 7:20. If I drink it steadily, with the stopper left open, it's still hot by 10am, when I'm finishing it. If I leave it more or less full, it stays hot into the afternoon.
I don't have serious needs for non-spillage, but it has never been a problem. There's no leaking at all at the seal where you screw down the lid. In my car's cupholder (Honda Civic), the mug rolls at about a 20 degree angle because it doesn't quite fit. Even when full, I've never had it spill in this situation because of the high walls above the mouth opening.
If I have any complaint, it's that when the mug is full, the liquid can glug a bit as it comes out, which can really burn your mouth. As far as I can tell, it happens because there's no little hole to equalize the pressure inside the mug. Putting less in or really sipping with care both help, but it seems like a design flaw.
Customer Review: OUTSTANDING Tumbler for Use in Vehicles Summary: 5 Stars
I bought mine four years ago in a coffee shop in New Orleans when I was stationed there, and it has been my constant companion since then. The top screws down tightly, preventing leaks. There is only one sipping hole in the top, and it is sealed by a snap-top that seals well and can be opened by just a flick of the thumb. More than once I have dropped this on the floor of my Odyssey but found no leaks whatsoever when I finally was able to stop and pick it up. Insulation is EXCELLENT - it keeps coffee HOT during my 30- to 45-minute commute (and I don't bother to pre-heat it before filling). The rubber band around the middle came off two years ago, and I tried to re-glue it with contact cement, but it did not hold. I really don't miss it. I have never had a problem cleaning either the lid or the interior. One reviewer mentioned that she sometimes gets a drop of liquid on her nose from the click-top. That has also happened to me, but I've found that if I just don't tip it so far when drinking out if it, I don't get anything. Also, if I leave the click-top open, any liquid on it soon evaporates anyway. I also dropped the tumbler out of my van onto a curb, resulting in a dent in the stainless steel on one side. That has only added a little character to the tumbler (hey, we all have battle scars, don't we?), and did not change the heat retention characteristics at all. All in all, I give this tumbler an OUTSTANDING rating, and I can't imagine how it could be improved.
Customer Review: Get This Thermos-Stat! Summary: 5 Stars
Pairing sleek, minimalist design reminiscent of Shaker functionality with the austere, almost mechanistic appeal of Germanic techno-chic, this durable and user-friendly thermos delights the eye while delivering on its purpose of keeping hot liquids hot and cold liquids cold. (How it manages to distinguish the difference is one of those great mysteries better left unsolved.)
Black matte rubber over brushed aluminum makes for a smart, dressy look equally at home at formal events or the casual ambiance of a Noel Coward revival at your neighborhood art house. Broad, bumpy black rubber band at center assures firm grip, whether you're bicycling one-handed through the Pyrenees or piloting your fishing boat into the teeth of a ruthless nor'easter, with only a fanatical acceptance of fate and a hot thermos of chicken soup to sustain you.
Hinged sip-hole cover snaps in place with almost military precision, assuring no unwanted outpourings. Dentilated lid enables sip hole cover to rest far out of live area for maximum convenience and features half-inch deep trough, further safeguarding against overflow and spillage. Lid is threaded and screws down easily for a seal so tight NASA might envy it. I've had mine for nearly a decade and would recommend it unequivocally. One caveat - hand wash, do not run through the dishwasher.
Customer Review: Almost Perfect Summary: 5 Stars
I have lived with this mug for months, now, and I love it. It fits into my car drink holder (which many mugs do not), and I like the lock back device which keeps the drinking hole cover out of your way (I have a beard). The tapered shape and nobby rubber grip feels comfortable and secure in the hand. The cap isn't leak proof, but it screws on tightly enough to prevent spills unless you knock it over, at which point liquid can seep out of the drinking hole.It really does what it's supposed to do, which is keep my coffee hot. This is especially true if you follow the instructions and rinse the mug with hot water prior to putting the coffee in. It stays hot enough for me much longer than it takes me to drink 18 ounces, although I do not like my coffee scalding hot. I find that I use this at work and home for a desk mug, as well as using it as a travel mug, as it is easy to carry around, and it has its own rubber coaster on the bottom. It holds a LOT of liquid. Two minor negatives: You can't microwave it (but you wouldn't need to, would you, unless the coffee was already cold in the pot?), and you can't put it in the dishwasher. I usually rinse it with hot water daily, and give it a hand wash in the sink when it needs it. Note that the outside is stainless, but the inside will stain. I truly recommend this product.
