Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Thermos Element 5 16-Ounce Leak-Proof Food Jar

Customer Review: Keeps soup hot for 6 hours
Summary: 4 Stars

This has been the best Thermos product I've ever been lucky enough to use. To keep my daughter's soup hot from 6am (when I pack her lunch) until noon when she eats it. I simply boil some water and put it into the Thermos before sealing it up and leaving it for about 15 minutes. At the end of that time I poor out the water (the outside of the container is quite warm to the touch) and fill the container with hot soup. This preheating is necessary to get the most out of this product.

While the Thermos is also good for keeping things cold, I've tried the pre-freeze (overnight in the freezer) idea and not been able to keep things frozen. Not really designed for that purpose I guess, but it was worth a try!

Reasons I give it 4 and not 5 stars: I think this is a good product for keeping hot things hot, as long as you pre-heat first, but not as good at keeping things really cold. I wish the mouth to the container was bigger, but then again it might not fit as easily into a soft-sided lunchbox if it was bigger. The container also has been known to leak, but that may be my fault for not seating the top properly when I tighten it. I seal it in a large Ziploc bag when I put it in a bag lunch to avoid mishaps. This container could be difficult for small hands to get opened without help, and/or tighten properly.

At 16 ounces this jar holds a lot of food. The stainless steel design is pleasing to the eye, easy to wash and it doesn't retain odors. Overall, despite a few issues, I really like this product and would recommend it.

Customer Review: Food stays hot, but hard to clean
Summary: 4 Stars

The food does stay hot...well, maybe not hot, but hotter than our old food jar. I make pasta and parmesan cheese for my son everyday for school and I find it's one of the harder foods to keep hot. I always pre-warm the container with hot water while the pasta cooks. He says this is a big improvement over our last one. I make it at 6am and he eats it around 11:30. I am certain that a denser food would stay hotter longer. The downsides are two that I have seen mentioned here. One is that the opening is not as wide as you might expect. It makes cleaning trickier, especially with the pasta and cheese which sticks like glue by the time he gets home from school. Pre-soaking helps some. I am guessing that cleaning up after soups would probably not be a problem. The second tricky issue is getting the lid on correctly. You have to make sure it is seated properly before screwing it down all the way. If not, it will be off just enough to have leaks or premature cooling of your food. All in all it does the job, but I would be thrilled if the mouth was wider. It seems very sturdy and up to the abuse a middle schooler can put it though.

Customer Review: My school- aged daughter is super pleased with this
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this for my daughter, as she loves having hot soup for lunch. She loves, loves it. It does perform very well: no leaks, plenty of storage capacity (roughly equal to a typical soup bowl that I have at home), and keeps food very nearly the same temperature as when I filled the jar. In fact, the first time I filled it my daughter complained that the soup was TOO hot. I had over-heated it fearing that it would cool off too much by the time she got a chance to eat it. Now I know to heat food only as hot as I know she likes it, and no more.
Some observations: From the picture, I had guessed that the lid could be used as a small cup. This is not so, as the lid is insulated as well. The jar opening, is just a bit narrower than I thought it would be, but not so narrow that it is impractical for a normal length spoon or fork to reach all the way down to the bottom, so this is not a problem. Lastly, it is a bit heavy and bulky, but given the quality, performance, and the large 16 oz. capacity, this is a small concession to make. I would buy this product again, and with no regrets.

Customer Review: Very Happy With Purchase
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought two of these Thermoses for my kid's lunches. They really work great! Their food is still hot at noon when I have prepared it at 7:30am. The kids love how they look and are really happy to have hot food again. I have tried so many other products and none of them have lived up to their product info. of "hot for 6 hours". It's definitely worth the money. The only feature I would change is making the mouth wider. It's a little narrow for chunkier foods, but my kids haven't noticed. It's easy to clean and the lid screws on easily without any "misthreading issues". I strongly recommend this product to everyone.

Customer Review: Thermos Element
Summary: 4 Stars

This easy to carry small thermos is very deceiving. It will almost, minus a tiny bit of broth, hold an entire large can of soup. It keeps it very hot throughout the day. The only thing that would have made this product better would have been to have a lid that acts as a cup. The opening is a bit cumbersome to stick a spoon into. Love to carry casserole, soups, and chili in this. It is nice to know that I can have a hot meal at lunch when a microwave is not available.
