Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sunpentown SR-1881S 1200-Watt Countertop Induction Cooktop, Silver

Customer Review: A superb cooker.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using this cooktop for a while, since I am preparing to move from a gas-stove-equipped to an all-electric kitchen (uggh.)
The Sunpentown countertop model boils water in the same time as the gas stove. More importantly, it takes the same time to bring my pressure cooker to high pressure and it then maintains the pressure better than the gas stove. Temperature control was truly instantaneous--pressure started to drop as soon as I reset the heater. (Hint: use Medium, not Low, settings to keep the cooker 'warm'). There are no boilovers and very little adjustment needed though you will still need to watch the presssure cooker.
Rice does not boil over on this cooktop, and I was able to pick up my All-clad pan by its handles without using potholders. Amazing.
I plan to use it for items that require heat changes (rice, pressure cooker.) The electric stove is suitable for steaming veg and stir frying, not much else.
I don't hear much of a noise from the fan at all. That other reviewer clearly had a defective model, or else their ears are unnaturally sensitive. The fan makes a slight noise, about the same as an air filter, certainly not as loud as the over-the-stove ventilator fan.
I don't know how durable this unit will prove to be, but it is a good, midpriced addition to a cook's kitchen when you don't have a good cooktop available. If I was remodeling, I'd consider induction cooktops if gas wasn't available.

Customer Review: Can't live without it!
Summary: 5 Stars

First, about the reviewer who said it turns itself off if the cooking pot/pan is empty, I'm not so sure about that. I forgot I emptied the teakettle and set it to heat for 4 minutes. I returned to find the kettle was empty and dangerously cherry red on the bottom when I returned. Fortunately the timer was set so it wouldn't have become an bigger more dangerous problem. However, I still give the product a 5 star rating since a pot can overheat on a conventional stove, too, and I was at fault for not checking the water level in the tea kettle. I recommend alway using the timer function..I wish I had option for my stove burners.

I use this item mostly to boil water, occasionally for cooking. I fill up the teakettle, set the temperature to high and the timer to 8 minutes and go. I love not needing to use the stove simply to heat up water, and I probably use it for this purpose 3 or 4 times a day. It works fasts, its efficient and the environment stays cool around it. I already had a tea kettle that worked well with induction cookers and my pots and pans All Clad and work perfectly. In the past tried electric teakettles, but they are limited and the water always tastes "off" when cooked in an electric kettle. Plus, in a pinch I have an extra burner to use to supplement my regular range. Extremely handy around holiday time!

Customer Review: 2 years and it's still my favourite cooker
Summary: 5 Stars

I initially had my doubts, as most of my cookware didn't work on this, but I did have a cast iron fry pan, and one IKEA "365" pot that both worked fine. Since then I have added a couple of other smallish pots and a small wok and rarely use my stove top anymore unless I'm making a large batch of stock or soup (you shouldn't use a pot or pan that's larger that the ring on the cooktop as it won't perform as well, and could compromise the plastic housing if it was exposed to much heat).

Suffice to say that I'm actually amazed how well this works, and how fast it brings my pasta water up to it's initial boil - much faster than my stovetop ever has. However, I still don't trust this technology to handle my soup/stock making as I will leave my stock simmering overnight and don't want to wake up to a kitchen fire or similar disaster, so I reserve my induction cooktop for quick cooking that I must stay at hand for.

I highly recommend this particular model as it's so easy to use and understand (I'm not tech-savy) and even my husband (who could burn water) is not afraid to use it for pasta preparation. All in all, it's great value for money spent (I got mine for under $100) and am seriously considering giving one as wedding present for a family member.

If this ever dies, I will buy another. :)

Customer Review: Real cooking on a hotplate-sized package
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought one of these to serve in the absence of a real range while I am renovating my kitchen. It works like magic. Forget about conventional electric cooktops (such as you might find at Target) unless you just need a warming plate. This thing heats up faster than gas, and offers precise temperature control as well.

Compatibility with my cookware is good, too. I don't use much teflon so I can't speak for how a typical aluminum pan might fare. But it's great with cast iron (as expected) and it works very well with my stainless steel cookware set. These are Costco's branded cookware, and have a copper-clad, aluminum-core base. All of the pans in this set work fine with the exception of the smallest saucepan. The burner obviously has a feedback mechanism of some kind to determine whether or not it's got a suitable pan while running, because when using the little saucepan, it just shuts itself off after about 20 seconds. But every other pan in this set works perfectly.

The only question I have now is... where can I get an induction range for my new kitchen? I'm a convert!

Customer Review: Flexible intro to Induction
Summary: 5 Stars

I wanted to experience induction before buying a new cooktop, and having this has changed my thinking completely.

#1 It's everything it's advertised to be: quick, easy, low energy use, no heat buildup in the kitchen.
#2 Now that I have this, I realize I no longer need the 36" cooktop I thought was essential, because this supplies the extra burner I need. Better, it supplies it at a slight distance, so I'm not struggling with counter space for staging. If there are two cooks in your kitchen, that's another advantage.
#3 It's so fast that it's my first choice for everything, from boiling water, to slow cooking a soup, to grilling a steak. (Love the Lodge cast iron grill!)

Paired with the Henkels gorgeous, hi-performance stainless steel cookware, you simply can't go wrong. Luxury on a budget - what could be better?
