Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sunbeam 6131 Hot Shot Hot Water Dispenser, Black

Customer Review: Two Words........Love it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using a hotshot for years....the old white one.........I recently bought a new house and have all black appliances, I was so happy to see the new Hot Shot in black! We use it every morning!!! LOVE IT!!

Customer Review: only lasted one year
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this as a gift in Dec 08 and it already stopped working by Nov 09. User did everything right, according to instructions, but it just stopped performing. What a rip off!

Customer Review: It does what it's supposed to do
Summary: 4 Stars

This does exactly what it's supposed to do: heat about 16 oz of water quickly. There are no moving parts so I don't expect it this to break anytime soon unless the mechanical piece or heating element goes bad.

A few negatives that prevents it from getting 5 stars:
1) Can only fit a regular sized coffee mug or smaller. If you have a tall glass or a wider mug, it does not fit under the dispenser.
2) Lever to dispense water doesn't have a good tactile response - I feel like I'm pushing down on it too hard sometimes (note you have to hold the lever down until all liquid is dispensed). Hopefully it does not break since it's plastic.
3) There's a place where you put the wire while using to keep it out of the way. Unfortunately our model's wire tends to get loose and make the unit uneven - still quite usable but slightly annoying wobble.
4) No way to turn off unit without unplugging as others have mentioned. So if you only wanted to heat something a little bit, the only way to stop the unit is to unplug it.

Customer Review: Basically you rent this, you don't own it
Summary: 1 Stars

Amazon didn't publish my last review so I am rewriting it from memory.

I owned this for 150 days and then it quit. We took it apart, basically this design is living on borrowed time as the unit will eventually fail.

Sunbeam placed the actual electronic switch below the aluminum bowl part and on top of the plastic housing. The grey button on the top is nothing more than a lever to another piece that actually depresses the electronic switch below the aluminum bowl. The real electronic switch is less than an inch from where the water flows from the aluminum bowl and out the dispenser. That switch, also sits right next to the heating element. Now you don't need to be an engineer to know that electronics don't care for heat and they don't care for water. In our case the heat killed the electronic "on" switch. I am not sure where the previous model's (3211) actual "on" switch was, but it had to be in a smarter location that this for it to last TEN years.

So the old design, built in the US apparently lasted 10 years and the new design, made in China lasted 150 days. I should have read the 1-star reviews as I would have found that just about every owner of the previous model have had nothing but bad experience with this model. Don't discount the opinions of those that owned the previous model. I don't think I will ever buy another Sunbeam product again, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

P.S. The only reason we replaced our ten year old 3211 model was because the rubber or plastic seal in the dispenser part had worn out and the unit would leak while dispensing.

Customer Review: Good heat, but too small
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a good quality product, it truly is. The problem I have with it lies in the fact that I bought it online rather than seeing it in a store. I use tall travel coffee cups which are pretty standard these days, so I had erroneously assumed that this model would accommodate them. That was my fault. While the Sunbeam does heat water quickly and to a good temperature, it is a big inconvenience to have to use a small coffee mug to transfer the water to my travel mug. It is also too small for me to slide my teapot under, meaning I have the same problem of transferring the hot water from cup to pot.
If you only use regular size coffee mugs this will be fine. If you're more fond of over-sized mugs or travel mugs - I'd advise investing in a different model.
