Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sunbeam 5891 2-Pound Programmable Breadmaker, White

Customer Review: Best Bread Machine EVER!
Summary: 5 Stars

This bread machine is not only a great value, but has become invaluable in my kitchen! I have previously owned this exact model. I had purchased it from Wal-Mart for around $40 several years ago, however,I opted to give it to a friend who believed she had Celiac Disease. I was happy to help a friend, but I desperately missed the joys of baking fresh breads for my family. Luckily, my husband just surprised me with a brand new one from Amazon for my birthday!
I can not say enough positive things about this bread machine! Not only does it have oodles of options like the more expensive models, (Crust color, 13 bake choices, 1.5 and 2lb loaf settings) but it has a delay bake option, and does a wonderful little beep for add ins! It is also relatively quiet and a pretty standard size for a bread machine.
I have never had any problem with breads sticking to the loaf pan or the blade inside the pan. Most bread machines have very oddly shaped loaves, in my opinion, however, when I choose to bake a loaf of bread in this machine, rather than just using the dough option, the bread always comes out looking and smelling fabulous! I have never had a loaf of bread to date fall, burn, or turn out in any way other than perfect! If you are looking for a bread machine that won't break the bank, but that is high quality I highly suggest the Sunbeam 5890! Believe me--you won't regret it!

Customer Review: EASY for a beginner to get started - Oops, it died!
Summary: 5 Stars

I had never used a bread machine before so I chose the least expensive one with the best reviews. It arrived last night, 30 minutes before I had to leave for an evening class. I managed to unpack it, glance at the instructions, get the ingredients together using the recipe on the wholemeal flour bag (many of the reviews warn about the manufacturer's recipes) and set my first loaf to bake. I came home four hours later expecting a brick, but what a pleasant surprise - nice bread! Now I can stop complaining about paying $5 for "artisan" bread, being suspicious of bread that doesn't go moldy, and being disappointed by wholemeal loaves that are too sweet for my taste. This machine and I are going to have a productive and tasty relationship.

Update - I've been using it for a while now and have become used to its little quirks. Mine cooks HOT so I use the shortest possible settings - basic recipe program even for wholemeal, and light crust. I have not been to the store to buy bread since getting this machine. Obviously it's entry-level but by golly it works very well.

Final update: After six months (approx 60 loaves) it died. I replaced it with a co-worker's unwanted Hitachi, which takes twice as long to make better bread. I have no regrets about the Sunbeam, which got me off to a good start.

Customer Review: Very Happy with it!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my first bread machine. After a couple of weeks looking at reviews and prices, I decided this would be the one. Its ALOT easier to use than I thought. I was dying to try it out so I used the ExpressBake Setting, which takes 58 minutes to make a loaf of bread. I didnt exactly follow the recipe that came with the machine. I was warned about this as they use too much yeast in a lot of them and there are some other errors so I just didnt bother. In the book there is an ExpressBake Traditional Style White Bread 1.5 lb recipe. I kinda copied this one. I didnt use bread machine flour because I didnt have it on hand so I used 60 % whole wheat and 40% white flour, 2 TBSP of active dry yeast (Your supposed to use bread machine yeast, but I didnt have this on hand either) and I added 2 TBSP vital wheat gluten. OMG! Wonderful loaf of bread like from the bakery! It was a little more brown on the bottom (dont know if its supposed to be like that) but really the tast was great! Crust wasnt too hard or anything like that and was super moist. The thing I would try differently is go out and get myself a bread machine yeast.

This is one of the best purchases I have made. I cant wait to try out recipes for whole wheat, low carb etc. . . I would TOTALLY recommend this to anyone.

Customer Review: Loafing and loving it!
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought this machine just before Christmas 2010 and have used it 3 - 4 times a week since receiving it.
I've tried several different recipes and have found that not all bread machine recipes are created equal!
Although not every loaf was "perfect", all the loaves were delicious! I've had to tweak yeast amounts (1/4 tsp at a time), water amounts (1tbsp at a time), and butter amounts.
I can tell how the bread is going to come out by the amount of noise the machine makes while it's kneading. If it's knocking around alot, the dough is either too dry or too moist. Follow the machine directions to rectify those problems. When the machine is fairly quiet it means I'm going to get a nicely risen, airy, and "pretty" loaf!
I bought the Betty Crocker Best Bread Machine cookbook at the same time. Many good recipes and the few that I've tried are great!
The last few loaves I've made have been near perfect & I plan to continue using my tweaked recipe for white bread.
Although the machine is new & I'm hoping that I won't have the problems that others have mentioned, I'm giving this a five-star rating. Should my feelings change over time, I'll do another post.
I hope y'all will enjoy loafing too! (Bread loafing, that is!)

Customer Review: Great machine, great price
Summary: 5 Stars

We got this breadmachine about 5 months ago (Aug 2007) and love it. We make bread at least once a week, anything from white, to corn, to whole wheat and rye bread and it does a great job on all of them. Mixes well (although giving it all a personal stir when you use sticky stuff like molasses or honey helps) and always bakes to a nice crust without burning. Most of the time we use the medium crust setting. The controls and programming are easy.
Would definitely recommend it, especially for the awesome price of $42.24. I can't imagine how a more expensive one could be better.

Update Jan 2010: We have owned the machine for about 2.5 years now and I estimate we have made about 200 breads with it. The pan is now starting to wear out. The spindle is bent/ loose and makes the paddle scrape the sides of the pan, removing the non-stick coating of both. It still makes great breads, but I fear it's on its way out. I would still recommend it to anyone for the price. We made so many great breads with it, and most of the time fairly heavy ones, so I guess it's no wonder it is finally giving up the ghost.
A pan and a paddle go for about $20-$30 + shipping (for both) on Gourmet Depot or Ebay, so we may just buy a new machine for the few extra dollars.
