Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sunbeam 5891 2-Pound Programmable Breadmaker, White

Customer Review: A great first breadmaker purchase
Summary: 5 Stars

This was my first breadmaker and after reading all the reviews here I nearly didn't get it. But after a lot of research, I thought that it was the best value for the money and ordered it anyway. I have never used a breadmaker before although I've wanted one for years.
I've now had it just over a week and have made 6 loaves of bread: Express White Bread, Regular Wheat, Honey Wheat, Rosemary Herb, Faux Sourdough, and plain French. Every single loaf has come out absolutely perfect including the ones I made from the breadmaker instructions (Express and Regular Wheat) that another review said weren't very good. I did not find this to be the case.
One thing I've been careful to do is use exact measurements and follow the manufacturer's instructions about loading the breadmaker to the letter. Some of the bread recipes I've made I found on[...], got from a friend or a breadmaker cookbook, and I'm convinced that measuring is the trick to getting good bread out of this machine.
Now that I feel comfortable with making bread I'm ready to move on to some of the machine's other functions, such as making dough and jam. I'm not the least bit concerned about it because experience has shown me that if I follow the directions correctly everything should work just fine.
I highly recommend this breadmaker for your first. The instructions are clear and concise, the machine easy to program and work. My only problem is now not making too much bread for us to eat, although my husband certainly isn't complaining about the sudden abundance of homemade bread!

Customer Review: Sunbeam Breadmaker is wonderful!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutely love this breadmaker. I make bread at least twice a week. It is so simple to use. Some reviewers say the lcd readout is hard to see, but I did not find this to be the case. It truly takes less than 3 minutes to get your ingredients into the machine and start it. Cleanup couldnt be easier. I cannot say enough good about this machine!

I personally use it more to make rolls than to make loaf bread. From start to finish, it only takes about an hour to have hot fresh rolls. I put my ingredients into the machine, set it to "8"-- the dough setting--and after it stops kneeding, it only takes about 15 minutes for the dough to rise in the machine, then i remove it onto my oiled baking/cookie sheet, punch the dough down, form the rolls, cover with a cloth, let rise for about 15 more minutes, then bake for about 12 minutes and they are done!

My recipe is:
Put 1 1/4 cups warm water, 2T olive oil, 2T honey into breakmaking pan.
Add 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour, 1/4 + 1/3 cups old fashioned oatmeal, 1 1/4t salt, 4t wheat gluten, 2T dried milk, 2 1/4t quick yeast (or 1 pk quick yeast).
Bake 12 minutes at 375.

This recipe is just perfect. After the rolls come out of the oven, remove them immediately from the pan. Let sit about 10 minutes, then you can put them into a freezer bag and freeze them. I use them as needed. You can let them thaw at room temp, or pop them in the microwave for about 30 sec to defrost them. Always taste freshly baked.

Customer Review: First bread machine...has made delicious, satisfying results
Summary: 5 Stars

I am not much of a baker; some cakes, cobblers, and not much else. I had always thought of dough as something mysterious, something bought, really advanced. I had never made home-made bread. So I wanted to choose a machine that had good reviews and was not too expensive in case it turned out to be something I didn't want to do or had bad results.

Well so far I have made some delicious whole-wheat bread and whole-wheat honey bread. It is so satisfying to have only around 5 or 6 ingriedents in your bread and to see the dough produced and then have the bread bake. And the bread has been delicious and hearty. You do have to be pretty precise in measurements. It is easy to make the bread too dry or too wet. You also are suppose to have your yeast at room temperature. I always forget to take some out of the fridge and end up having to wait to bake the bread.

The machine itself has a fairly big footprint and it is a bit noisy. Note I have not had some of the problems other reviewers have mentioned. However I do take seriously the measurement is key when baking. With the correct ratio, I have yet to have a bad loaf and I have done around a dozen now. Overall for someone who has never baked, I have gotten really good results from the get go and it has been much easier than I imagined. For the simple whole wheat breads I have made it literally is only a few minutes of work and then the machine...and yeast do the rest.

Customer Review: FANTASTIC!
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this thing. It's baked loaf after loaf for us, and each one has turned out very well. I've never tried more expensive machines so I can't compare -- but I'm getting married soon and don't plan to register for a separate bread maker, as I can't imagine needing any features not included in this one.

It bakes every type of bread we've ever thought of. It makes great dough for baking in the regular oven -- I made some yeast cinnamon rolls that were out of this world. Cleaning is extremely easy. (I actually don't really clean it much -- the non-stick pan is so non-stick that the baked bread slides out without a trace. Not the best habit, I know, but still an impressive feature in a bread machine!) It is so easy to use. I did read the instructions, and now all I do is measure the (usually very few) ingredients into the machine, turn it on, and get fresh bread when I want it. I haven't used any recipes in the included instructions -- I go to allrecipes.com, which has some real bread machine winners.

I will say that it's a bit noisy, but again, I have nothing to compare it to in terms of bread machines. I haven't had any problems noted by some reviewers with the machine moving across the counter, etc.

All in all, a great buy. I love that I can quickly make delicious, healthy, economical bread whenever I want. Highly recommended, especially considering the price.

Customer Review: Sunbeam 5891
Summary: 5 Stars

Thanks to the reviews I read here, I purchased the Sunbeam 5891. I was prepared to spend A LOT more on a bread machine and was VERY happy to spend less than $40.00 at Wal-Mart.

Well, I tried the machine Christmas morning for the first time and I was able to make a perfect loaf of whole wheat by following the simple directions. Dough rose perfectly, density is great, slices well and tastes great. I may have even turned my kids into whole wheat eaters.

I took the advice of others and did not use the recipe that came with the machine. Instead I bought the book by Donna R. German (Favorite Bread Machine Recipes). Honestly, this is not brain surgery. All I did was follow the directions and measured carefully.

For those who have not had success with this machine, I cannot, for the life of me, figure out where you went wrong.

To new users, follow the advice I received here. READ the manual, throw away the recipes that come with the machine, buy a new recipe book (like I mentioned above) pay attention to the kneading cycle so you can adjust the dough if necessary (this is important for all machines, not just this one) and enjoy excellent bread and spend the money you saved on something else.

Clean up is ridiculously easy. Unlike others, I have no issue with the LCD being dim or hard to read.

Good luck, buy this machine!
