Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker Knife Sharpener 204MFCustomer Review: Don't be scared by the complexity Summary: 5 Stars
I looked into a number of different knife sharpeners before choosing this one - based mostly on its positive reviews. Truth be told, I was a little nervous that compared to some of the basic knife sharpeners that this one would be difficult to use. It looks so much more complicated and downright alien compared to the other models on the market.
That turned out not to be the case at all. The sharpener is really no more complicated to use than any of the pull-through models. It even comes with an, admittedly cheesy, instructional DVD that walks you through how to use it. Yes, the Spyderco sharpener requires a a couple more steps to get the absolute best edge. The results, however make that extra effort completely worthwhile.
Beyond getting a razor sharp edge in a way that other sharpeners never were able to for me, this one allows you to sharpen other items that pull-through sharpeners never would. So don't be scared by the looks of this thing, it really is simple and effortless to use.
Customer Review: Simple and very effective Summary: 5 Stars
I used to have a Chefs Choice 100 electric sharpener, which I had to give up during a move. Instead of buying another one, I gave the Spyderco a try.
The Chefs Choice was very easy to use and produced a factory-sharp edge in a matter of seconds. It did not go beyond the average factory sharpness, though.
The Spyderco requires a tiny bit more skill and a few more minutes of care (cleaning, putting together, etc.), but you can get an edge that is literally razor sharp. It is also much friendlier to your knife, it never scratches the sides and it takes off just enough metal to sharpen, and not an gram more.
The only caveat is that the Spyderco is prone to round off the tip of the knife if you aren't careful. Also, if you have a chipped or seriously dull knife, it will keep you busy for quite a while, unless you invest another $40 in the diamond rods.
If you are willing to spend 10 minutes into sharpening a knife, and you are looking for ultimate sharpness, go with the Spyderco. If your life is too busy for that, the Chefs Choice is a very good alternative.
Customer Review: Better than electric knife sharpeners Summary: 5 Stars
I have owned a Chef's Choice knife sharpener for years but was never completely happy with it. It got my knives sharp, but the edges seemed to be rough and the sharpness seemed fade pretty quickly. Also I wondered if it was damaging the blade after repeated uses. I saw the Spyderco Tri-Angle sharpener and it reminded me of one which I had owned years ago and I was pretty happy with. I ordered the Spyderco and it is amazing. It is so easy to use and it gives VERY sharp edges. I just give a knife 10 swipes per side and it is amazing how sharp of an edge I get. I've always heard that sharp knives are safer. Well after using the Spyderco I'm not so sure. A couple of times I've accidentlly knicked myself with an edge and cut myself. This never happened with knives I'd sharpened with other sharpeners. The Spyderco came with two sets of stones: White fine and Gray Medium. I've only used the fine stones so far and they are amazing. At some point apparently I'll have to switch to the medium stones to re-tune the edges. I definitely recommend this product over the Chef's Choice sharpeners.
Customer Review: Frustration - OVER! Summary: 5 Stars
I was nearly obsessed with getting a shaving sharp knife edge on my blades. I guess it's a guy thing. I looked at so many Youtube videos where they would make a few passes on a stone then cut paper into fine strips with no effort. After purchasing so many tools, I tried to repeat the process, only to get it sharp enough to cut paper on every second or third try. Mostly it would just tear the paper.
I don't know what possessed me to try this tool, but I can happily report I have been sharpening like a madman and creating those tiny little paper strips to my heart's content. This is important because so many of my daily uses are things like cutting vegetables in the kitchen, opening letters and packages, etc. None of these are heavy tasks, but they require a very sharp blade.
So if you bought a pocket or kitchen knife/knives then became disappointed you could never quite get the original edge back on it, then your journey has ended.
Be patient and follow the instructions exactly, and you will be impressed.
Highly recommended!
Customer Review: Works Great So Far! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this in my possession for less than 24 hours. After running my Leatherman juice through the sharpening process (5~10 minutes), I now have a bald spot on my arm. Very pleased with how sharp it came out. I am planning to buy a pair of the Spyderco Ultra Fine Triangle Stone stones completely out of curiosity as to how sharp it can make a knife.
I was hesitant to buy this, as there are soooo many sharpening tools available out there. I was considering either this Sharpmaker or a Japanese whetstone or a power band sanding sharpener etc etc. The Sharpmaker worked so well so far, I doubt I will be buying whetstones or the others. This system seemed to be the easiest to use, and required the least maintenance or skill of all the rest.
What you don't really see in the ads are the various ways the stones can be fitted to the base. For example, you can arrange the stones on top for wider blades like a straight razor, or on the bottom for a chisel.
