I bought this to have a variety of flavored drinks without the hassle of shopping for them. I also like plain fizzy water and don't always think to pick it up.
I don't use the recommended amount of syrup. All I've tried full strength were just too sweet. My grandkids loved the root beer. I've gone thru a full bottle of the root beer syrup and made about 5 other bottles of other flavors. I'm now running low on the CO2 cartridge. So I would have to say it's cost effective.
SodaStream did say Kohls carried the cartridges, which did help influence my decision to buy because there is one locally. However, when I called yesterday, Kohls only carries the cartridges seasonally and that season is now gone.

We are huge perrier and soda water drinkers and were going through cases of perrier a month. Now we can easily make our own soda water in seconds without sodium and without having to recycle glass and plastic bottles. We go to our local kitchen store for the refills and pay $20 for each new CO2 cartridge. We buy a refill about every 3 weeks. We have saved so much money using this soda maker. We do not drink flavored sodas so I have not tried any of the flavor packets...they really don't sound so appealing. I would highly recommend this product if you like to drink perrier, pellegrino or soda water and you are concerned about the high cost of bottles soda water and the waste of disposing of all the glass and plastic.Customer Review: best item ive found in a few years

I live in San Francisco, came across this by accident when looking for a rolling pin at a discount chefs store called chef's warehouse. I was skeptical, but the guy that owns the shop said people love it. He told me if I wanted to I could take one home and if I didnt like it I could return it... well its been 2 months. And I have no intention of returning it. The canisters at the discount store cost 24 dollars, and if you exchange a canister, it costs 14.95... very cost effective in my opinion. I love plain carbonated water, but I also love the fact that I can make a custom drink of almost any kind for my friends when they come over for drinks and socializing. I have had one of these Sodastream machines for a few years now & it has changed the way we shop in a very positive way. It is very economical to use since it requires no electricity, just cold water & a bit of syrup if you desire. The process takes about 2 minutes & you have a one litre bottle of delicious soda or refreshing seltzer to enjoy. It is very user friendly & even a child could safely operate it with no problem. It has eliminated our having to lug those heavy two litre bottles of soda from the grocery store & then having to dispose of the empties which clog up our landfills. Local retailers are now starting to carry the machine & supplies so you can save on shipping charges which is a huge money saver.Customer Review: Great product, but don't plan on saving lots of money

This product is as advertised, but don't plan on saving tons of money. It does make great soda and it's always fresh. It's true you will no longer have to lug cases of soda from the store to home and empty bottles back to the store or recycling center. The nice part is that you can make your own soda to suit your own taste. Our family does not drink lots of soda, but when we want some, it's nice to make it fresh in this soda-maker. We live way too far from town to go buy soda on a moment's notice if we have company or just feel like having something other than our usual water. It does work well, and you may save a tiny bit of the environment in using fewer plastic bottles, but you won't save much money.
