Customer Review: Sharp R-820JS .9-Cubic Foot Grill 2 Convection Microwave, Silver Summary: 4 Stars
Great all around microwave for singles. The only thing it does not do well is microwave popcorn.
Customer Review: Nice looking, versatile, but has flaws Summary: 3 Stars
Bought this in Feb 2006 after doing a lot of research. There was a deal going then and I got it for just 206. The unit is pretty compact and looks nice. I have a small kitchen so counter space is at a premium, and I like that the oven is versatile. For the convection part, I like the pizza settings and use them for just about everything. The drawback is that the oven is hot after using as a convection, so you can't just pop something in to nuke it like you can with separate appliances. The microwave works fine, but the popcorn setting is useless. Better to put 5-min on the timer and just stand there waiting to cut it off when popping slows down. The carousel has always worked perfectly, and was so pretty when new... but keep in mind that it will get dirty quickly and is hard to clean. Replacement parts are very pricey, so I've just lived with the ugly thing inside.
This week, there was a burning smell when heating up some leftover pizza using the convection. I thought there may be some food or something under the carousel, but that was not it. Later I started heating some water in a Pyrex measuring cup, and it arced inside! And there was a horrible strange burning smell, like a chemical or something, I aired out the room for fear of something being toxic! Of course I have unplugged it, and am now without a microwave. So why did I give it 3 stars? I liked the unit, it was easy to use, and we used it daily (many times every day!) both as a convection oven and a microwave for nearly 4 years. For a little over [...] bucks, this oven gave us a lot of use. I'd have liked it to go another few years without needing a replacement, and I am also concerned about the safety hazard as I have no idea what caused this problem. And, I have found other reviews which say this happened within a year! Which is why I am looking at other brands for my replacement.
Customer Review: Too Complicated and Too Small Interior Capacity Summary: 3 Stars
Well, I admit that I do need to sit down with the manual which I have not done since my preliminary look through gives me the impression of unnecessary complication. However, I can't understand why I have to enter some number that tells the machine what I am going to be cooking (with very few choices available) in order to use the convection feature. Sure I can look up a number in the manual and plug it in, but what am I supposed to do when what I am going to cook is NOT a casserole or a baked potato or one of the very few other choices they provide????
Currently I just pick one of the choices and use it whether or not it is what I am really trying to cook. I would vastly prefer simply to be able to put in the temp. I want to cook an item at and the time I want to cook it for. That would certainly seem to make sense, but apparently you can't do that. Whatever I plug in for a food choice, it does seem to work okay except that preheat takes forever.
The other thing is that I sure wish I had purchased the larger model. This one has too small an interior for many things I might like to fix. I would rather have paid more and have more interior space. Unless you have space limitations, get the larger model. A major reason I did not choose the larger model is that it looked too complicated! How ironic is that.
Other than being too small, the machine works okay except for the weird and unnecessary complications regarding how to use the convection feature. It's very annoying to me. Why can't I just plug in the time and temperature I want to bake at, and put the food in, and cook it?
