Customer Review: Save your money and your food!

As a single guy who has to buy and prepare his own food I'd been seriously considering a FoodSaver for a while now. Then a couple days ago I saw the Reynold's Handi-Vac at Meijer's while I was grocery shopping and decided to purchase it. After pricing the FoodSaver and it's accessories online I was aware how much money I'd have to plunk down if I wanted to get one so it wasn't hard to spend $12.44 ($9.95 for the Handi-Vac and $2.49 for 14 bags).
With the Handi-Vac I also bought one of those 5lb logs of hamburg. When I got home I divided the hamburg into five one pound sections, wrapped those in some wax paper, and placed each one in a vacuum bag. The rest is pretty much a no-brainer; place the suction cup of the Handi-Vac over the round blue vacuum hole in the bags and push the button.
The instructions tell you to press the suction cup down firmly over the hole in the bags on a hard surface, but when I did this with the first bag nothing happened. After fiddling around with it I discovered that I only had to press down firmly on the holes for about a second or two (just long enough for the first crinkles to form in the bag) and then lift the suction cup up ever so slightly and all the air would rush out.
I am thoroughly impressed with the results of this process; the bags would seal completely around the food, just like the ones I saw in the commercials for those two-hundred-dollar-plus FoodSavers.

UPDATE: Ok, it's been almost two years now and my Reynolds Handi Vac is still going strong. Yes, this is still the original one I purchased and wrote this review about. The unit takes six AA batteries, but if you're like me and use only rechargeable batteries then it shouldn't be a problem (and I have only had to swap out those six batteries one time in the last year and a half). As for true food storage convenience I finally took the plunge and purchased a Foodsaver, which has turned out to be an excellent product. However, I still use the Reynolds Handi Vac (and the smaller quart size bags) for many other chores besides food storage. For example, I use a lot of kitchen sponges around the house and to keep them from dying out I store (and vacuum-compress) them in my Handi Vac bags. I even wash the Handi Vac bags out and let them dry to reuse again. A trick I have come to learn with the bags is that if you lay them flat on a hard surface and press down firmly on the seal with your thumb then the bag will hold a vacuum longer. All in all, definitely a good purchase.
Update (Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009) - This product has now been outdone by FoodSaver's new FreshSaver Handheld Vacuum Sealing System [http://www.foodsaver.com/freshsaver]. So if you want a handy handheld vacuum sealer I would advise checking this one out. - DC
