Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Mason Jar Dispenser Pint GreenCustomer Review: Green Mason Jar Dispenser doesn't disappoint! Summary: 5 Stars
After having trouble with several decorative soap / lotion dispensers, I'm always hesitant to buy them without first inspecting them up close. Fortunately, this one works very well. The pump itself is dark gray, and it seems to be made of thick, sturdy plastic with tight seals. It's set into what's probably an aluminum lid, also dark gray, shaped like the antique Mason jar zinc lids. The metal lid has a tight seal to the glass body of the jar, and I'm able to lay it on its side or turn it upside down without any leakage. The body of the jar is light green, exactly the color of recycled glass. Currently, I have amber-colored soap in it (soap details at the end of this review). When the sun comes in my kitchen window and shines through the glass, the effect is truly stunning. In case you can't read the text on the dispenser from the photo, there are 4 lines of text and line by line it says: "Mason", "+", "Patent Nov 30th", and "1858". The "+" symbol on the second line is not exactly a plus sign. It looks to me like a Maltese cross. I like it, but you may or may not. This is just something to consider, as the symbol is fairly prominent.
Please note that I haven't yet attempted to use this dispenser with lotion. My plan is to buy another one for that purpose and so obviously my inclination is that the pump is strong enough to handle the job. I will most likely only use lotions which are thin enough to pour into the base jar. I don't know about thick creams. Having said that, please bear in mind that I doubt I would trust any pump with a thick cream.
Decorative-wise, this pump would work well in any traditional, eclectic, eco-friendly, or country kitchen. It would also be lovely in a kitchen with soft or neutral colors, a kitchen featuring green milk glass or recycled glass items, or a kitchen with an accent color in the shade of recycled glass.
On the somewhat down side, the shipping time for us in Texas was six days--not terrible, just something to keep in mind if you're thinking of giving this as a gift. Also, the cost of our shipping was $6.95, bringing the total cost to $21.94. Knowing that the glass makes this a "fragile" item, I didn't mind so much except that normally, I would never pay $22 for a soap dispenser especially given that similar items (not nearly so pretty imho, but still, similarly made) can be found at Target for roughly $14 before tax. However, this dispenser has proven to be a reliable, attractive addition to our kitchen, and we love, love, love it! Fyi, to offset the cost, I decided to try Dr. Bonner's peppermint soap in the 32 oz size Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Soap - Peppermint (32 oz.), which at $.27 / oz (before tax, bought locally) has also proven to be a wonderful find.
