Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OpenX Dual Blade Universal Package OpenerCustomer Review: The Better Mouse Trap Summary: 5 Stars
If it's true that when you invent a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your door, then the inventor of OpenX better fence of his/her porch quickly. Finally there's a way of getting things out of those annoying blister packs covered in what seems like bullet-proof kevlar. Given the fact that everything (it seems) that you buy in Home Depot, Office Depot, Staples, or CVS comes in a blister pack, this tool is just what the doctor ordered...literally! I don't know how man times I've cut myself--OK, maybe not e-room seriously, but bandaid seriously-- trying to open a blister pack without cutting what's inside or the directions on how to use what's inside. OpenX makes it easy and safe. This latter point is especially important because my two kids are no longer at risk when they open CDs or blister packs from CVS and the computer store. Slice open a small slit with one blade; enlarge it with the other, and pieces of packaging are no longer all over the floor. My only gripe with this tool as simple as it is, is that someone else and not I invented it. But then I'm shy and wouldn't want people beating paths across the lawn.
Customer Review: Worth keeping handy Summary: 5 Stars
This was the first package opener I ever saw and it made so much sense that I grabbed it immediately. I've now used an OpenX for at many years and it's rare when it can't do the job.
Make about a 3/4" slice with the small blade then hook in the larger one. The trick to it, and the hardest part too, is to hook into only ONE layer of plastic. On some packages this is easiest on the "bubble" part of the package, not an edge. After that, its very easy to use. If you need to get documentation out, it's then much easier to get that single layer near the edges after you've cut out the item from the bubble. Neatness does not have to count.
I've had three of these and eventually lost or misplaced two. On this last one, I broke the plastic on it's "lower jaw" after two or three years of use and abuse, but it seemed to be starting to getting dull anyway. After all, it's basically just utility knife blades in a fancy handle and they all will eventually get dull. It's still usable but not as safely, so I am ordering a couple more. Fortunately they're pretty cheap and well worth the price.
Customer Review: Finally, the perfect package opener... Summary: 5 Stars
This little wonder is used all the time. Last Christmas I bought about 10 of these for stocking stuffers. I kept two for myself to use at home and work. I use them to open up cardboard boxes, packages in the mail, the foil on the top of pill boxes and peanut butter, and to cut through all kinds of tape. But what this really excels at is opening those horrible plastic blister packs. You just make a small slit in the plastic packaging with the pop out razor blade, then stick the plastic point into the slit and run the OpenX around the edge of the packaging. There is no need to worry about cutting your fingers while trying to open plastic packaging. I will always have one of these around. Nothing better to have during Christmas and birthday present time.
My only complaint is that it comes in the same plastic packaging it was created to open.
Customer Review: Used on a regular basis Summary: 5 Stars
I love this package opener. It's what I grab when there is a new Amazon delivery. I have several and keep them in different parts of the house. Besides the one I keep handy for those Amazon boxes, I keep one in the kitchen as well. I use the small blade to put a slit in those microwave dinners. Although I am sure it would be possible, I have never been injured using this device. I have a friend who recently needed stitches and then surgery from a cut she received using a box cutter. I sent her one of these. One limitation to this is the heavy clam shell packages. It's hard to open them using this alone. I also have a Zibra ZPCOPEN-OR Open It Universal Package Opener, which I use for those tough jobs.
Customer Review: Frustration Fighter Summary: 5 Stars
I hate getting products in strong, awkward hard plastic containers. There is no easy way to open them. I have tried knives, screwdrivers, chisels, and scissors. For me it is tough to open them without damaging the product inside.
Then I heard about the "OpenX Dual Blade Universal Package Opener." It is not expensive so I thought it was likely a scam. I mean those packages are tough. How could a device so simple and cheap do the job?
It actually works! Now I wonder why I didn't think of it and invent the thing - I could have funded my retirement. Well my frustration is down and I can now order products and not worry how they are packaged. I recommend this product.
I rate it high because of the frustration relief.
