Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Rachael Ray Hard Anodized Nonstick 5-Quart Oval Saute Pan with Glass Lid, OrangeCustomer Review: Great for Folks With Disabilities Summary: 5 Stars
I have Lupus, and suffer from the growing loss of mobility in all of my limbs. I love to cook, but have struggled to continue using my expensive cookware because it is now too heavy for me to safely manage.
I have agonized over this development and had feared that I would be forced to replace my cookware with really thin (light and cheap) aluminum pots and pans. If so, I knew I would be giving up a lot of cooking flexibility and the quality I had learned to rely on and love.
At least, I thought that until Rachael Ray put out her imaginative cooking line! Not only does this five-quart oval saute cook like a dream, it weighs about half of what my other cookware does, has that great helper handle to lift it and serve the contents, and cleans easier than ANY pan that I own at any price.
As a result, I can continue to do what I love -- cooking -- despite my illness! When you're disabled, you have to give up a lot of things that had been meaningful in your life, not to mention independence. I applaud ANY product that is disabled-compatible.
In reading the reviews for this great pan, I hadn't noticed anyone raving about its weight. For folks like me, that's a really huge deal.
Thanks, Rach!
Customer Review: This pan can do anything! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this saute pan at the same time as the Rachael Ray Pasta Pot (which I also love). For a brief moment, I thought I made a mistake buying this because I thought that I could use the pasta pot for everything. That thought passed quickly once I realized that I needed to be able to cook pasta simultaneously with a sauce, or whatever, in the saute pan. The saute pan is also not as deep and makes it easier to cook certain things and use different utensils that would be more difficult to use in the pasta pot (like a spatula to turn things).
And why do I say this pan can do anything? Last week I volunteered to make fried rice for a work function, so I began to cook the rice in my rice cooker. The problem? Apparently my rice cooker decided it didn't want to work, and I had given away my backup rice cooker! After some thought, I decided to throw the rice and water in the saute pan, and lo and behold, it worked! In fact, the rice cooked much faster than it would have in the rice cooker, probably because of the large, yet shallow, area of the pan, and the texture was fine. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference! For me, this pan works miracles.
Customer Review: wonderful, very pleased Summary: 5 Stars
This is a nice pot with many applications. Wonderful for all dishes-especially rice with cranberries, etc. Clean-up is easy, maintains new appearance. The orange handles are cheerful. The oval shape fits nicely on one burner.
We had misgivings about the clean-up & utility of the glass lid. It is well-tempered, metal-rimmed & we like it, for you can see the inside of the pot. It is not heavy.
This is a healthy cooking tool as one does not need much oil on the base-nothing sticks. We also really like the extra high rim. We agree with the other reviewer-this is fast becoming one of our favorite pots/pans & is very useful. We are pleased with our purchase.
Update 12.21.09: This pot still looks new. It is a great size. Washes up easily. The elliptical size allows for easy mixing & folding in of other ingredients. It has become the favorite pot in the kitchen.
Goes into dishwasher easily.
Customer Review: A hands-down winner Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this pan a few weeks ago, but haven't had a chance to use until today. I used it to make a beef braised in red wine. Sauteing the beef and then the chopped vegetables was a breeze. I thought that the oblong pan might be a problem with my stove, which his a flat glass top. But it worked out great. The fact that part of the pan is not under the burner was actually a benefit, because I could push the cooked vegetables to the less heated part and thus prevent overcooking. I then put the whole concoction (with the red wine, broth, etc.) covered in the oven for the 3 hours need to braise the meat. The rubber handles, while they still need to be handled with a pot holder, were not scorching hot like metal handles would have bee. This is going to be my new go-to pot for all stove-to-oven cooking.
Customer Review: My Favorite Pan and One of the Best Presents Ever. Summary: 5 Stars
My boyfriend saw me eyeing this in the store on a few (hundred) occasions and got it for me for christmas. I had not bought it myself because I couldn't see paying that much for a single pan since I've never shopped for such things. I'm officially won over now. This pan was definitely worth the money. It distributes the heat beautifully, doesn't let anything stick, and makes it super easy to cook larger amounts of your favorite recipes for crowds. Plus, just like the lady herself, you can make the sauce for your pasta course for 6 people or so and then toss it all together in the same pan. And yes guys - if your wife or girlfriend actually loves to cook a pan like this is not only an acceptable but a wonderful present for her.
