I've never used a hand ricer before, and have only used the cone shaped ones for apple sauce, so I was totally amazed and pleased with my first attempt at mashed potatoes. I specifically bought the yukon gold type, and followed the recommendation to steam them, not boil them. I scooped them into the ricer, squeezed the handle, riced all of the potatoes and stirred in warm milk and butter with a wooden spoon. Absolutely amazing. Turned into perfectly smooth potatoes. This is a great product for making homemade baby food. Its easy to use - no annoying blades or other inserts to mess with. Just insert food and push. Its also easy to clean - just stick the whole thing in the dishwasher. I find that is a nice alternative to food processors and other more complicated baby food makers. Of course this also makes delicious, lump free, mashed potatoes. I would recommend this to a friend.Customer Review: Great for mashed potatoes....

I originally heard of this particular brand of ricer on the TV show, America's Test Kitchen. They rated it the highest out of all the ricers they tested. I totally agree with that conclusion. The ricer is EXCELLENT, and easy to use. The leverage is what I appreciate the most. You can easily rice things, without a lot of "elbow-grease". I especially like to use it for very good mashed potatoes.Customer Review: Solid device and insert removal tip.

As others have mentioned despite the fact that this is made of plastic it has a very solid feel. The insert removal is a bit reverse intuitive though. The trick is to depress the tabs on the insert and wiggle them back and forth to loosen it. If you just try and pull straight up it may or may not come apart.

Great mashed potatoes. Well made and very easy to use and clean. STEAM Yukon Gold potatoes, they won't fall apart like they do in water, and then put them in this ricer and just stir in other ingredients. No need to blend and you get awesome mashed potatoes. Oh yeah, great price ! Purchased 3 of these things. Makes a great gift for any home cooks.
