Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Potato Ricer and Baby Food Strainer

Customer Review: Excellent replacement for my old aluminum ricer
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been ricing potatoes for years with a hand-me-down aluminum ricer. The things that bothered me about my old ricer were:
- potatoes went everywhere because the holes were on the sides and bottom of the ricer
- the ricer was beginning to rust due to not being stainless
- I could not rest the ricer on the side of the pot because there was no extension or place to suspend it

Enter the RSVP Endurance Potato Ricer. At first, I was concerned about the ricer being made of plastic and seriously considered the much more expensive RSVP Stainless Endurance Jumbo Potato Ricer. However, it had holes on the sides (which I didn't like on my old ricer) and from the reviews, especially at Cooks Illustrated, I was concerned about the comfort of the handles as well as it being three times the price. So I purchased this one. The first time I used it I didn't peel my potatoes and I have to say it seemed hard to use; I asked my husband to squeeze the handles. However, the second time I peeled the potatoes and ricing them was a breeze!!! I have small hands and a bit of arthritis and had ABSOLUTELY no problem using this with peeled potatoes. The handles are very comfortable and being able to suspend it from a pot while loading in the cooked potatoes was terrific. Following the advice of a reviewer here, the ricer comes apart very easily for cleanup.

I expect to be using this ricer for many years to come. Excellent product!

Customer Review: Bye Bye Behemoth - - - - * * *
Summary: 5 Stars

My old ricer was a behemoth that really took two people to operate effectively. It also shot potatoes out the side holes which made a mess. After Cook's Illustrated reviewed this ricer in 2008 and rated it their winner, I decided to give it a try - the price was certainly reasonable.

The ricer is made of sturdy but lightweight plastic, and with the pot extension it balances easily over a pot or bowl without tipping over while I load the hopper with spuds. I have no problem pushing a full hopper of potatoes through the finest plate in one smooth action, but for folks who do I can suggest not filling the hopper completely full (on this or ANY potato ricer).

Clean-up is a breeze for me - either by hand or on the top shelf of my dishwasher - but I have read that others have had problems with the green portion collecting water. I understand how this could happen, though I've not experienced it myself. I found using the ricer to be intuitive, but admit that the manufacturer totally missed the mark by not including some sort of use-and-care guide.

Aside from the lightest, smoothest, fluffiest mash potatoes ever, this gadget is indispensable for making lefse, spaetzle, and gnocchi. I am well pleased with the ricer and would recommend it to anyone.

Customer Review: Ricer Makes Potatos So Creamy
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this particular ricer after seeing it on "Cook's Country Test Kitchen". They did a comparison of other models, some much more expensive. They ranked the RSVP as top, for ease of use(no muscles can even use this one) and ease of cleaning(it disassembles and rinses off, washes clean in seconds). Dish washer safe too. I tried it on regular potatos and sweet potatos, same amazing results. Smooth creamy lump free delicious. All I added was some salt, pepper, and some garlic seasoning and they were yummy. No extra fattening butter needed with this device. It makes the potatos so creamy, it's like a culinary miracle. This is my first ever potato ricer, so the RSVP opened up a whole new realm of potato enjoyment. I'm told it can work on other veggies that are usually boiled, like cauliflower and celery root. Making potato pancakes is a snap! I recommend it highly. It's only down side is that the main body is plastic and it will eventually break under pressure(if you don't cook the veggies fully,it's harder to squeeze, and the pressure transfers to the plastic parts, which could make them crack). However, it is strong plastic, so, even under extreme abuse, it should last a while. At 20.00, I'll buy another.

Customer Review: The MOST Delicious Mashed Potatoes Ever!
Summary: 5 Stars

WOW! I love this ricer! Ok, so this is my very first ricer, so I can't exactly compare it to any other brands I've tried; however, this one works great, is easy to clean and is pretty darn cute - with it's lime green center piece. I had considered buying one from Target or the grocery store near us, but the one at Target looked really cheap and clunky, and the one at the grocery store looked very sturdy, but it was $30. So this one seems like a great deal - it's cute, it's not cheap looking or feeling and it was only $15.

I just made a batch of mashed potatoes and they came out AMAZING. Super smooth and just melted in my mouth. I was so excited by the results I had to jump on here and review it.

I originally bought this with the idea that it would help me make baby food for my little one here, but I think I'll be using it a lot this winter making mashed potatoes for the whole family. And to boot - it's FUN to use! I mean, if I ever find myself not using it, I can give it to my kids for their play-dough activities. It's perfect for that!

If you like mashed potatoes, I 100% recommend it. I wish I had discovered this tool years ago!

Customer Review: Replaced my stand mixer for potatoes
Summary: 5 Stars

This ricer is terrific. I read about it in the America's Test Kitchen cookbook and also their web page. Before I bought the ricer, I used my stand mixer and had to whip the potatoes pretty aggressively to make sure there were only a few lumps. My mashed potatoes were popular with guests but I think it was the huge amount of butter and half-and-half that I use. I could not believe the improvement when I started using the ricer. The potatoes are silky smooth and do not have a trace of air from over mixing. I like to clean most things by hand although the ricer is dishwasher friendly. The ricer disassembles nicely for cleaning and goes back together in a snap (literally). It also has two disks for different jobs. I like this device so much that I plan to buy another one and give it to my daughter-in-law for her upcoming baby shower (along with other stuff of course - this ricer only costs 12 bucks)! The ricer can do double duty by pureeing or mashing food for the baby as well as making first class mashed potatoes. You can't go wrong with this ricer.
