Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Prepara Garlic Crusher, Black

Customer Review: easy on the hands
Summary: 5 Stars

The Prepara Cliq Garlic Crusher is very easy to use, doesn't require any hand strength and is easy to clean. With the slightest grip it ratchets down on the garlic (or whatever you're crushing).

Customer Review: Prepara Garlic Press
Summary: 5 Stars

If my kitchen was on fire and I could only save one thing I'd run in and grab my garlic press, its the first one I can actually rely on.

Customer Review: Works well, to a point

It's nice, but be careful about applying too much pressure, and some may find it hard to operate.

We bought our first Prepara Cliq garlic crusher, a green one, at local, upscale store, and liked it so much that, having a need for two crushers, we bought another Cliq -- the black model -- from Amazon.

The instructions say that it can handle multiple cloves, up to 6. I found that it was easy to load, though if you fill it to near capacity, it gets harder to close the unit and engage the ratcheting mechanism. I found it much easier with only one or a few cloves. My wife found it hard to operate, saying it required more of her strength. The sales clerk had a bit of difficulty when demonstrating the unit, figuring out how to open it. I thought that process was easy, just release the tab at the tip and pull the arms apart fully, then the unit springs open.

The real problem came a few weeks after using the first crusher. The plastic rim around the grate simply fell apart. In hindsight, that seems like a very likely occurrence. After all, I was forcing the last bits of garlic through a steel grate, with a metal ratcheting mechanism that locked in the pressure, against a thin plastic rim. The store was very gracious and refunded our money. I will be careful not to apply maximum pressure on the second Cliq.

Customer Review: Sorry I ordered this

There's a reason why the imperfect reviews outnumber the 5 star reviews...this unit is not so great. I SO rarely give poor ratings on Amazon, but this is one definite exception. I thought the price and design would end my search for the ultimate garlic press, but not so. First, it is too complicated, too many moving parts. The bottom lever that you pull down on allows the inner cage to pop up and release so you can clean it out--that is if you are lucky. It releases beautifully when empty, but with garlic residue and 'schmutz' inside, it remains stuck until you fight with it to release it so you can get inside and clean it out. I'm exhausted just explaining it so imagine how frustrating it is to go thru the actual process. It's bulky too, reminds me of something I'd find in my husband's tool box. When I squeeze the two parts of handle together to actually press the garlic, sometimes the skinpad of your hand gets caught and actually pinches! So now I have to remember to lift my hand up while squeezing. Do we really need to go thru all these gyrations just to have pressed garlic! I am seriously considering returning it and using my old, cheap garlic presses, more user friendly. The search continues for the ultimate garlic press.

Customer Review: Dont believe the NYTimes...they only report, not review

I was really conned here. Yes, it works. But not so well that it's worth $20, unless you're handicapped by arthritis, for example. The mechanism works great, the opening, filling, closing, etc. Even the crushing is OK, the extracting what didn't get pushed thru is no better than the old fashioned press. And it still needs a lot of clean-up, in the crevises, putting it in the dishwasher (as they advertise) without a some careful cleaning doesn't make sense, at this point all you need is to rinse. My husband was laughing (altho he didn't know it cost $20!)thru this whole process.
