Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of World Cuisine 48297-99 Tri-Blade Plastic Spiral Vegetable SlicerCustomer Review: LOVE THIS SPIRAL SLICER!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a must-have kitchen item for anyone who loves pasta and wishes to keep off extra weight while still enjoying all they want of it. As so many others have stated, this unit is more than sturdy enough to handle the job it was designed to do, my favorite being to make spaghetti out of zucchini.
While I love to eat healthy versions of childhood foods, my sister does not. She would not even try my zucchini pasta with marinara sauce the night I made it. So, I left some in a bowl for her to try later. The next day, I received a call from her to tell me she really liked the "fake pasta", BUT, she thought, it was because I had mixed it with real pasta. It took me a full 10 minutes to convince her that it was ALL zucchini, RAW zucchini, just warmed up by tossing it with hot spaghetti sauce!
She was ready to concede that the strands with green skin on them were zucchini, but it was almost impossible to get her to believe that the pale strands from the center were not made from semolina wheat. :) I gave her this unit because she needs to lose about 20 lbs. and part of her problem is she loves to eat spaghetti in the colder months. Unfortunately, I don't think she is actually using it because I still don't think she believes me! So, please know that this is NOT too good to be true: Zucchini spaghetti made with the tiniest cutting blade on this unit has the same texture and taste as real spaghetti when served warm with tomato sauce.
The best thing, though, is that besides being nutritionally superior to pasta made from grain, one can eat as much of it as one wants without ever feeling bloated or heavy - or putting on extra weight as a result. Just cut the zucchini into 2" long sections, set a section in place, and twirl it against the blade of this unit. Voila! Freshly made spaghetti pasta. You'll have no pot to clean and need no time for cooking. This unit rinses off very easily after using; and it takes me less than 5 minutes to wash a couple large zucchinis, cut them into 2" pieces, and run them through the spiral slicer. It seems almost effortless to make a huge bowl of al dente (zucchini) pasta, which I serve mixed with hot spaghetti sauce to warm (not cook) it up. Don't hesitate to buy and try it. It's actually FUN to use, too - it's like I'm a kid playing with my Play-Doh machine again, only what comes out is very healthy to eat!
Customer Review: I bought it to make curly fries! Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted to make my own curly fries. This vegetable slicer does that! I used the 1/4" blade and found that you must use the pressure handle on the unit to produce the best cuts. You do end up with a vegetable core which some people have complained on other reviews that it ends up being waste, but that really was not a big deal to me. I tried cutting up and frying the cores, but I didn't like them so now I just throw the cores away. It's very little waste anyway. I did find that smaller potatoes produced tighter spirals, but the smaller size also produced a lot "waste" where there were just short curved shaves of potato. Larger potatoes produced fewer of the tight spirals and much more of the swooping long spirals, but they also produced less "waste". Using a combination of large and small potatoes produced a good mix of curly fries for me. I fried them in the deep fryer, shook some sea salt on them, and they were YUMMY!
Based on some other reviews, I tried making "zucchini spaghetti", using the 1/8" blade. I found a recipe online at steamykitchen.com where you basically BRIEFLY stir-fry the zucchini noodles and add sauce. The spiral slicer produces very long zucchini spaghetti "noodles" and I did find them to be somewhat difficult to bite off while eating (so just cut them short before cooking) but it really did produce a delicious, low-cal meal!
The extra blades store within the unit, and it's very easy to change them out. Just rinse to clean, and do it sooner rather than later to minimize staining of the white plastic. I paid $29.99 for this slicer and I am very happy with it!
Customer Review: Great spiralizer! Just what I needed. Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this vegetable slicer so I could make vegetable noodles for raw dishes. I originally made the mistake of purchasing the Joyce Chen spiralizer, which is not at all the same as this. (For that unit, vegetables needed to be cut into 1" pieces (What's the point?!), whereas with this World Cuisine slicer, vegetables can be kept whole. Perfect!)
Admittedly, it took me a few minutes to figure out how to properly set up my zucchini to get it spiralized (I looked up a video on YouTube explaining how to do it, which helped greatly) - but now it's like second nature & spiralizing goes really quickly. This spiralizer serves its purpose well & is easy to clean (something I demand in my kitchen appliances!). I like that all of the blades can be stored in the body of the unit, and the suction cups on the bottom are so handy!
The spiralizer makes spirals the size of spaghetti (pretty thin, but not like angel hair), fettuccine (somewhat thicker), and thin shards (using a straight blade; I haven't used this one yet). I love having the variety of sizes to create. This spiralizer would also be great for creating curly fries from potatoes, but I've only made raw noodles so far.
I definitely recommend this spiralizer! Very fair price here on Amazon, too, as opposed to some other units I have seen.
Customer Review: Love This Thing! It's Fun To Use! Summary: 5 Stars
Okay - I am trying to understand the negative and even fair reviews on this product. Yes it's plastic, and yes - the amount of use it gets will determine its longevity, as will how it's used, or if the directions are followed or not. But, you kind of figure that before you buy when its description says that it is plastic and has turning parts. That aside - I LOVE this thing! I was a bit skeptical - but I have put carrots, zucchini, and cucumbers through this so far with amazing loooooooong noodle results (especially on the squash and cucumber). This slicer is easy to use and clean (just use a small brush to get the veggie remains out of the cracks of the blade) with simple easy to follow instructions. The blades are extremely sharp. If I can get carrots through - I have no fear for anything like a potato or an apple. And if the spiral blades are that good - I am sure the slicing blades are a snap. I really appreciate the suction cups on the feet. If you secure the machine correctly, that this thing is not going anywhere. A secure shredder also means less pressure on the lower lever which is used to apply gentle pressure to push the food towards the blade while spinning the top lever. I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever. I highly recommend this product.
Customer Review: Super fast and fun! Summary: 5 Stars
I was looking for a metal rotary veggie cutter like my mother-in-law's, but I didn't find anything metal in my price range. The reviews for this product made it sound like a sturdy and useful cutter, so I went ahead with it. Right out of the box, it is completely usable, easy to figure out, self-contained and exciting! I've cut peppers and onions for fajitas and Philly cheese steaks, potatoes for fries, apples for a fancy-looking apple crisp and cheese. All of them cut swiftly and easily. Clean up is easy if you rinse it off right away (I didn't after the apples and did have to spend a little more time scrubbing). It's sturdier than I feared and I must admit it's a blast to use. No more standing around bored at the cutting board and no more uneven, ugly veggies. :D I plan to use this almost every day.
Edit: March 2011-- Not only do I still love and use this, but I have some additional praise... Seems to continue holding up well and have had no malfunctions or problems. It's easy to wash and keep clean. And best of all, I've shown my kids how to use it, and it's as much fun for them as it is for me! :D So now everyone wants in on dinner prep.
