Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of PUR 18 Cup Dispenser with One Pitcher Filter DS-1800Z

Customer Review: Does what it's supposed to -- in style.
Summary: 5 Stars

Having read that PUR does a better job than Britta on purifying water (although I'm not knocking Britta), and being really tired of taking 3 or 4 gallon jugs of water home on the bus every week, I went for broke and bought the PUR DS-1800Z Two stage water dispenser (and the pitcher as well). The first time I drank (Washington DC area) tap water that had been filtered in this PUR Dispenser I knew I had made the right choice -- it tasted WONDERFUL and refreshing. I also felt better about NOT having to buy all those soft plastic water bottles (even though they DO get recycled here)

It's winter and my kitchen is not heated so I have this out on the counter. I will probably have to put it in the fridge come the warmer months -- although I don't like drinking cold water.

I'm on my first filter -- the suggested time to discard it is between one and two months-- I would prefer to err on the side of caution and give each filter no more than 4 or 5 weeks usage.

Can these filters be RECYCLED????

My ONLY gripe is that I emailed the company and asked them some questions at least 10 days ago and I have NOT received a reply yet. Yes, PUR, I REALLy need to know: 1) how to clean this dispenser, 2) What the chances are of mildew buildup in the dispenser if I choose NOT to refrigerate this water in the summer and 3) if water from the bathtub tap can also be used (filtered of course). <:-)

Customer Review: PURely Efficient at What it Does.

What can I say about this pitcher? It's just simply fabulous to use and very simple to set up. I've just a PUR water faucet mount before and had been greatly impressed by how better it made my water quality (even though it had cracked over the year it still functioned ok); so I had no issues with purchasing another PUR, after my faucet mount kaput. This time though I decided to go w/ pitcher--since I can also have nice icy cold water from out of fridge anytime I wanted.

The PUR pitcher is very simple to set up--as long as you follow the instructions--in about 20 minutes I had it up and going, and into my fridge. The size is also another added benefit of this pitcher as it takes up about as much space as the sort of 2 gallon big jugs (w/ the built-in valve) of water you get at the store and filling it up is as easy as popping open the lid and running it under your faucet. I also like the design of it and how the valve works as a pull lever, rather than a push button, which is great because you do have to exert a lot of effort to get a cup of water from--it (the lever) can even lock down to keep the water flowing w/o you having to hold it down. This is great if/when you need (or want) to pour a large amount of water out of the pitcher.

Great design + size + simplicity = one great product. Definitely a must-have for any household; I'd certainly recommend it to anyone.

Customer Review: I HATE water...
Summary: 5 Stars

First let me preface this review. I could not stand drinking water. I would rather drink juice, soda or ANY other drink other than water. I bought this because I knew my kids would think the dispenser was cool and that it would help the taste of the water...for them. Now, let me tell you what I think about this product.

I now drink water on a daily basis and actually enjoy it! It has taken me a couple of decades to find a product that can actually turn my bad drinking habits around. This filter does an outstanding job in filtering. I have bought regular facuet filters in the past and nothing has come close to this in the way of water filtration. The water is perfectly clear, has no aftertaste and is oh, so, refreshing. The kids love it too because they love going to the fridge and dispensing their own water with the pull down dispenser.

The dispenser is sturdy and not cheap feeling, and has a sleek slim design that is perfect for small spaces. Now I have read in some reviews that the filter does work slowly, and that is true to a certain point. It is slow but not too bad. I usually fill up the top tray when the water level is just above the dispenser. That way by the time the kids (or I) need it again the container would be full and cold. This is a excellent water filtration unit and thank Amazon for offering a great deal on a great Pur product!

Customer Review: Water never taste so good!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased two of the Pur Water Dispensers, and I have never enjoyed water like I do now. I live in Dallas so the water is not the cleanest and has a weird taste to me. These were a must. Never buying bottled water again. Anyone that says these are slow must be a fool. They don't filter right through instantly, it takes a little bit of time but I think some people are just very demanding now a days. Go try 56k internet speeds and try to remember that use to be standard for surfing. Filling it is very simple, I just take the top off and put in sink and fill to the top. Put back in the fridge and wait 5 minutes and I will have a glass of fresh, clean water. I bought two because I am lazy and don't replace things when they start to get low. This way I always have one full on reserve. Only complaint I have is not knowing when I should replace the filter....They provided some stickers with a timeline of months but I don't find it very useful. I guess I will just replace when they slow down or the water starts to taste "normal" again. I will read through other reviews and see how often others replace theirs. I imagine every 3-4 months but who really knows if you use more or less than average Joe. That really doesn't bother me, the filters are reasonably priced on here and vs. purchasing bottles of water, I'm saving some major change in the long run. MUST BUY MUST BUY!!!!!

Customer Review: Good compromise
Summary: 5 Stars

This dispenser gets a LOT of use. It would be nice if we didn't need to fill it so often (usually daily), but a larger dispenser would be unwieldy and take up too much counter space, let alone refrigerator space.

Every faucet-mounted filter we've tried ends up not fitting quite right, or getting bumped once too often, and springing a leak in its brittle plastic parts. So although the dispenser is slower, it has been more durable.

The water in our area passes all contaminant tests with flying colors each year (if you live in town, check with your city government to see if water test results are available--they should be), so the possible health issues of inadequate filtration don't apply here, but the taste bothers me, so the dispenser solves that problem neatly. Tea and coffee made with dispenser water also taste better. We aren't rigorous about replacing the filter every 40 gallons, or every 3 months, but the filter still makes a difference in the taste some time after its useful life should be over. This is nice because, like with printers and ink refills, you'll spend a lot more on filter replacements than you will on the dispenser itself.

My only real complaint about the dispenser is that it takes 2-stage filters, not 3-stage, and it's getting harder all the time to find 2-stage filters on store shelves. Not a huge deal but inconvenient.
