Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of PUR 18 Cup Dispenser with One Pitcher Filter DS-1800ZCustomer Review: Beats Brita pitchers hands-down, not even close Summary: 5 Stars
Our family had been long-time users of a Brita pitcher and basically I thought we were happy and satisfied with it. That is, until our kids got older and wanted water all the time and we needed greater capacity plus easier self service. So instead of Brita, I heard a lot about PUR and thought we'd try this instead. Now I wish I had found and switched to this so much earlier, instead of Brita all this time! It really is that much better.
The water is the cleanest and purest we've ever tasted - and you can't stop drinking it. Plus because of the size it's most always full, provided you fill the top part a couple times a day. Yet it's slim and looks good on the counter, and easy for the kids to use on their own.
The fact that it now runs laps around Brita in terms of filtering out so many more things, makes it all the better. I hadn't realized how much Brita had fallen behind, until reading the specs here. Again, I wish I'd found it years ago when the kids were babies.
The filtering is slower than Brita (which makes sense, since more things are taken out), but you don't notice it because you're just not running out of water easily with the large available reservoir. We're going over 2 months now on the original filter that came with it, and the water still tastes good.
Since we can't have a sink-mounted filter on our particular sink, this is absolutely the best choice - and I wish we'd been drinking the excellent water from this product all these years instead.
Customer Review: Why pay $7 dollars a bottle from the "Big Boys" ? Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great product because of the amount of water it holds, its dispensing ability and build. It is slim, maybe 2 - 4 inches in length and takes up minimal space. I think it is more ideal for Side by Side refrigerators (which I have) but I am sure it would work well in a traditional style fridge. I have had this for four months now and it still is in "new" condition. I am a former Marine and I drink water constantly and I have had no leaky gaskets and no structural issues with it. You can fill up the top chamber (blue) and let it filter down to the second chamber (clear). Once this is complete, (10 - 15MIN) you can refill the blue chamber and have it fully loaded. My family probablly fills it 3 times a week. To fill it, I take it out of the fridge, put it in the sink and fill it up; it takes about 30 seconds. I had a salesman over here recently and offered him some water, he did one of those, take a sip, look at the cup gestures saying, "Man what kind of water is this?" I had to show him the PUR system, he was like can I have some more, i said sure just peel that grey lever towards you.
Something I just learned: Filling water bottles! I always hovered the water bottle below the dispener. Apparently the genius who designed this thing made it water bottle friendly and you can put the opening right up to it because there is a clear narrow thingy-ma-jig (that is the correct spelling) that you can "connect" to, and it wont make it unsanitary for other users.
Customer Review: A WONDERFUL WATER FILTER - GREAT TASTING WATER! Summary: 5 Stars
I have tried other water filters. Living in the Rocky Mountains, our water has not only the chlorline which the city adds to it, but minerals. I tasted the water from my friend Jennefer's BRITA water filter, but the PUR really makes the water taste much better than hers. She only lives a block as the crow flies from my house, so I know we have the same water. At first, when I used this filter, I felt there was something missing from the water, but Jennifer told me to put a clean silver (not stainless steel) spoon in the top and it should help with the missing minerals. I haven't tried it yet, as I have gotten used to the water minus whatever mineral I was used to tasting before. The filters are on the expensive side, but since there are only two of us left in the house now, and I only fill the tank 1-2 times a day. My husband used to take bottled water with him to work, out in the oilfields here in the Uintah Basin of Utah, operating heavy equipment, and now we just refill the same two 24-oz bottles each day, pop them in the freezer and they are ready for the next morning when he leaves. Considering the cost of the filters, I am not sure how much it actually saves, but I believe it saves some of the expense of the bottled water from the store, and surely there is an added bonus of less empty bottles in the land-fill. I purchased a 3 or 4 count pkg of filters. I just keep it on the kitchen counter, but it would fit perfectly on the shelf of the frig as well!
Customer Review: great tasting water, better than brita! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this PUR dispenser to replace my Brita dispenser. Without fail, after using a new brita filter even after a week, the water would still taste like it was not filtered properly and still had an odor and a faint tap water taste. I was concered about that flavor and odor after all, if I wanted to drink tap water, i'd turn on the faucet and drink it.
Anyhow, after reading many reviews on line (not just on amazon) I decided to give the PUR a try. And I am glad I did. The size of this dispenser is so perfect for the fridgerator storage. The handle is flat against the dispenser so it doesn't have a chance to get caught on anything and leak in your fridge. The filter instructions were easy and once it was cleaned and all together, It didn't take more than 20 minutes for me to have fresh, clean, odorless water. It tasted so "PURE". I was so impressed and so thankful that i was finally drinking fresh tasting water that didn't taste funny or have an odor. I've read other reviews where they say it takes an hour to fill it up. That wasn't the scenario here. Like I said, about 20 minutes and I had half of the container full already. It is very lightweight and very easy to pull out of the fridge to refill when it gets low. so if you are reading other reviews that say it is akward, ignore it. I find it easier to refill and maneuver moreso than a single gallon jug of water due to the handles at each end of the dispenser. hope this review is helpful.
Customer Review: Filtered water tastes better than bottled water Summary: 5 Stars
Many years ago, a doctor advised my wife that she should avoid drinking tap water because of the possible pollutants in Long Island water because it comes from underground acquifers. Prior to using the PUR, we purchased gallon containers of bottled water by the case at a warehouse store. Aside from the cost, a case of 6 bottles weighs about 50 pounds, which was too heavy for my wife to lift, so she couldn't buy water if I wasn't with her.
About 3 years ago, we decided to try a water filter instead of bottled water and so we purchased the PUR DS-1800Z. The filtered water tasted great. In fact, it tasted much better than the water from that spring in Maine that we had been buying. This is the most important thing to consider when choosing a water filter.
PROS:
1. The filtered water tastes great.
2. It has a large capacity so you don't have to constantly fill it.
3. The cost is low - filters are about $7.00 each and they last us about 2 months.
4. It has handles that make it easy to pick up so that you can bring it to the sink to fill it.
5. The filters are easy to change.
6. It has a sticker that helps you remember when it's time to change the filter.
CONS:
1. It may not easily fit in all refrigerators (such as Sub Zeroes). Because of this, we leave the filter on the counter and keep a pitcher of cold filtered water in the refrigerator (no big deal).
