Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 5712 Electronic 2-Tier 6-Quart Food Steamer

Customer Review: Works GreatW!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

We had the Black & Decker steamer for something like 10 years prior to getting this one. It worked great as well as this one. The reason that we went for this one this time is that it is bigger and can much more readily cook multiple items where the Black & Decker is limited in this aspect.

The only improvement that I could suggest for this model would be to make the smaller bottom item deeper so the rice cooker could fit in it. If you want to cook rice, it only fits in the top pan. So what you have to do is start the rice in the top one with the cover and then when you add the vegetables, remove the top one, insert the vegetables in the bottom container & then put the top container on top of that.

Customer Review: GREAT BUY

This is one of the best small appliances I have purchased in a long time! I find myself using it almost everyday. I use it for everything from cooking rice, steaming artichokes to making hard boiled eggs! Use the smaller "egg basket" on the bottom and the larger basket on the top to steam more than one thing at a time and you can cook two things at once without using your stove.
Just use caution and a pot holder when removing the lid to avoid a painful and nasty steam burn. (Yes, I unfortunately speak from experience) I did a lot of reading before I bought this one and am pleased to say I have made perfect stuffed grape leaves as well as tasty tamales!
It's a great buy and works wonderfully!

Customer Review: High Powered Steamer cooks right through tough foods.
Summary: 5 Stars

Hello,
I have used this steamer twice, the last time I cooked for my in-laws a dish with redskin potatos, baby carrots, cut up Kilbasa, spices, and even used the rice cooker inside at the same time. It turned out very well, but the total mass of the other food took away from the steam needed to cook the rice, so just have to adjust the cooking time to be longer to compensate for the extra food in there. The other time I just cooked rice alone, and it worked very well, it took 45 minutes for 2 cups of brown rice. It is a very good appliance. The day after I bought it, I saw my local Target had for the same exact price, but had to pay tax, so if you can get free shipping, it is well recommended. Thanks!

Customer Review: This Steamer Rocks!

I researched on web for days before deciding on The Oster 5712 Food Steamer and it is an excellent machine. The FIRST night we steamed mixed vegetables AND Snow crab. I was able to get about 2 lbs of snow crab in the big basket. I bought it based mostly on reviews on Amazon and they were very accurate. I confess I bought it at Target for $29.95, though I was ready to buy on Amazon if price was close.
The clean-up is very easy and much less mess in the kitchen. No pots no pans. I have no complaints. I am very happy with this product. The kids thinks it is way cool after seeing how easy it was to do the crabs. I most definitely recommend the 5712.

Customer Review: You will use it a lot
Summary: 5 Stars

The Oster Food Steamer is one of my favorite appliances. It is easy to use and the vegetables come out perfect every time. This appliance also cooks rice--and I feel it does as good a job as the expensive models. I tried some rice made from a fancy rice cooker at a high-end cooking store--and I could not tell the difference. (Not listed in the instructions is how to cook jasmine rice--I used 1 cup jasmine rice and 1 cup water and steamed for 35 minutes--great for a Thai dinner). I have also made lobster tails, crab legs, and cooked fish filets in the Oster steamer. I would highly recommend the Oster steamer. It is affordable and easy/fun to use.
