After reading all the great reviews on Amazon, I purchased this steamer for my husband and me.
We keep it permanently on the kitchen counter, we use it so much!
We have cut potatoes out of our diet, but don't even miss them, because fresh carrots, parsnips, green beans and more are made flavorful and AMAZING in this thing.
We even tried frozen peas in it, and oh my! The peas were bursting with flavor that you just don't get from the stove or microwave cooking.
The steamer is easy to figure out, and small enough that it isn't obtrusive in my tiny galley kitchen. All the pieces go into the dishwasher, making it a no-maintenance appliance. Even better for me than using a stock pot, because mine can't be put into the dishwasher!

I use this steamer every evening after work to create healthy dishes that I love to eat. My current favorite is chicken breast and lots of fresh vegetables (cabbage, carrot, mushrooms, green beans, etc). This is a great way to get fast healthy meals. Even when I am tired from working all day and battling traffic, I have energy to fix dinner in this steamer. Any left over's go to work with me the next day and serve as lunch. I feel more energetic and my stomach is flatter after two weeks of cooking exclusively with this steamer. I am even thinking of buying a second steamer to steam larger amounts for holiday dishes (green beans, sweet potatoes, russet potatoes, etc). Love it and you will too. If on the fence, just get it! This product will change the way you cook and eat. It's a little large for just one person, but the extra room comes in handy. It starts to steam almost instantly. I really like the electronic timer and the 'keep warm' feature. Most veggies cook in 12-15 minutes. Larger like corn on the cob about 30. With the timer, you can drop the corn in for 15 minutes. Go outside and mow the lawn. When you come back the corn is 1/2 way cooked and on the keep warm cycle. Drop some carrots in for 15 minutes and they are both done at the same time! I threw away the stove top steaming basket I bought just last month. If you have steaks on the BBQ the keep warm cycle takes the hassle out of trying to have everything done & hot at the same time. After 10 years of use very day, my old Black and Decker Food Steamer died. Since B & D doesn't seem to make large capacity steamers any more, I opted for this Oster model. A lot has changed in 10 years and Oster seems to have packed some pretty wonderful features into the 5712. It cooks food a lot faster than my old B & D; I suspect because the holes at the bottom of the tray are larger so the food steam cooks more quickly and because the heating element is newer and more efficient. It's very easy to clean and put back together for future use. I am very impressed by the self timer and the keep-warm features. They are both very easy to program. Buy this at TARGET for $29.95. It's the exact model for a lot less money and no shipping charges.Customer Review: Use it daily!

Awesome... fire and forget. I just love cooking things and not having to baby-sit them without the threat of burning the whole neighborhood. My wife is actually sick of me suggesting things to try to steam. I want to eat healthier so I try to steam a lot of my food. This thing is awesome with veggies, rice, corn on the cob, POTATOES even!! Haven't put any meats or fish in there yet (I'll have to do it while my wife is sleeping because she's against that). However, we've pretty much made everything else with it. It does a good job with clams too. Anyways, I like it and it deserves 5-stars because it makes delicious meals that are healthy. Word of warning, rice may take up to an hour to cook in it. Oh well, just set it before hand.
