Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 5712 Electronic 2-Tier 6-Quart Food SteamerCustomer Review: Why Didn't I Buy This Earlier? Summary: 5 Stars
I looked and looked at the electric steamers on Amazon before buying this one. I wanted to be able to cook hard-boiled eggs, steam veggies crisp-tender and do it without standing over the stove babysitting a pan. I am only cooking for two, so this steamer seemed a bit large. But once I got it, I realized there are times I need to steam large quantities. So this size is just right for us.
It took lots of experimenting to get the proper amount of steaming time for various foods. The booklet that came in the package gave ballpark times, but those times usually usually resulted in overcooked things, especially veggies. Once I learned to use a shorter time, things came out just as we like them. Yellow squash and zucchini are especially great as are broccoli, carrots!
I was careful not to undercook the eggs. It's really nice to have them cooked, in the fridge, ready to put on a salad or make egg salad or deviled eggs. Easy.
I have this steamer on my countertop all the time. I'm from the clean countertop school, so you can see if I would leave it out, I really like it.

Customer Review: BEST Steamer on the market!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
THIS STEAMER IS THE BEST!! I have used it for years with -perfect- results everytime (at home or work). Toss in your veggies, fish, pork or chicken, sprinkle on seasoning (Mrs.Dash & spray butter works great) turn it on and forget about it. As a nurse its a blessing when you've cooked your lunch and it gets really busy, you can always go back and after a brief re-steaming, your food is hot and perfect. I use a non-stick spray and lighty coat the baskets/collection tray so clean-up is a breeze (this also prevents staining the plastic). COOK AN ENTIRE MEAL ALL AT THE SAME TIME: Top basket cook fresh Vegs- carrots, snap peas, cabbage, red potatoes, corn cobs, green beans, sweet potatoes, squash, zucchini, asparagus .... (retain all the good noutrients with steaming); bottom basket cook: ultra moist/mouth watering- chicken & fish....(low in fat with steaming); clean one unit vs pots, pans, stovetop and oven. It also gives a recipe for Banana Nut Bread (haven't tried yet), cook rice, even eggs and/or potatoes for (hardboiled/devil eggs or potatoe salad) I will NEVER go back, WISH I COULD GIVE IT 10 STARS!!
Customer Review: Outstanding Value Summary: 5 Stars
I usually do not write reviews, but I had to write one for this product. I bought my steamer about a year ago, after my daughter had purchased one and recommended it. I was a little concerned after reading some of the reviews about the drip dish, and modifying the unit to make it more usable, but took the plunge.
I love it! The unit is reliable, easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to store. I use it constantly, whether for veges or fish or chicken or steamed dumplings. I do not have any problem with the drip tray, and as I mentioned, I have even cooked a chicken in the unit without any problems. I use it as it came, and have had absolutely no problem with it. (I do have a separate rice steamer from Japan so do not use this steamer for rice).
Several years ago I moved, and my old house had had a Miele wall steamer. I was joking with my daughter while I was steaming dinner tonight and remarked that I sure had found some real savings with my Oster over the Miele! Easier to clean, too!!
Seriously, I would recommend this product to anyone who likes to steam food.
Customer Review: A hit! Summary: 5 Stars
So, my husband was mildly annoyed that I had ordered another "gadget" and I did my best to convince him that we really needed it because I wanted to cook more with steam. We have had it for about 11 months now and we used at least 4 times a week - he loves it as do I. It is ideal for reheating any type of food and fantastic for preparing ready made frozen meals - the food does not get burnt or tried out instead it stays moist. He loves popping some food into the steamer, setting the timer while he ocntinues to work in his office with no worry - it peeps when it is done and you really can't ruin it. I love steaming vegetables with it - anything from greens to potatoes - it works fabulous. I only made rice with it once yet and I think it takes longer as it would with a rice cooker. I don't make rice that much and now use a regular pot often as I make speciality rice that easily cooks. I definitley recommend this item it is also easy to clean. It does take up some space but for us it is worth it. I should mention that we do not have a microwave - we prefer this steamer by far.
Customer Review: Nice little time saver Summary: 5 Stars
All things considered, including the concerns about BPA that others have mentioned, I love this and use it fairly often, mostly for hard boiled eggs and for steaming vegetables. I read the reviews about hard to wash, mold in the water reservoir, etc, but I still like and use this for our family. I used to overcook veggies, so to have them come out with a desired doneness is a HUGE thumbs up at my house.
Also, I may be breaking the law with this, but I do not hand wash this steamer. All of the parts except the bottom electrical part fit in the top rack of my dishwasher and come out great. With every use, there are at least 4 pieces to wash, so the dishwasher makes it nice and easy. With these home improvement/time saver gadgets and appliances I think you just have to pick your battles about what you love and what you will tolerate to get meals prepared as quickly as possible without destroying all food value. I am replacing lots of plastic items in my kitchen with safer glassware, but this is one appliance that is a keeper in my mind.
