Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 4716 Egg CookerCustomer Review: Eggsactly What We Needed. Summary: 5 Stars
I may be biased towards the Sunbeam/Oster name, mostly because I have a family history with the company going back decades.
I am not a fan of eggs per se. However, the wife and kids are big fans of eggs. As a matter of fact they would eat eggs with every meal if they could.
The problem we faced was that since I don't ever eat eggs, I don't know a thing about cooking them. And my wife is a self admitted 'Non-Cook' when it comes to just about ANYTHING!
We began the test run of our new Oster 4716 Egg Cooker with the Hard Boiled eggs.
With the easy to follow instructions, not only in the booklet, but actually ON the product too, it was a snap!
According to the Mrs. the eggs came out to total perfection. Just soft enough in all the right areas...which I guess is the whole thing.
With the soft boiled eggs, there was again perfection. My wife hadn't eaten eggs cooked this way in quite some time, but enjoyed them none the less.
The poached eggs were the kids favorite! With a piece or two of toast, the kids called them the best 'dippy eggs ever!'
To top the whole experience off, the cook time was relatively short.
I don't remember the exact amount of time it took to cook each one, but the wonderful thing about this product is that it is all automatic! When the eggs were done cooking, the light in front went off, and the click at the perfect pitch let the household know their snack/breakfast was ready and waiting!
Another awesome thing that Oster does is put easy and delicious recipies in the instructions for some even better meals!
Needless to say, I'm highly reccomending this product. For the price, you honestly can't go wrong, especially when it makes your life a whole lot easier!
Customer Review: Simple to use... Unplug when you're not using it Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for my 75-year-old mother who has been banned from using the gas stove after a couple close calls. She wouldn't use the microwave egg poacher I bought her. But she is okay with this. It's pretty simple to use -- pour in some water to the correct marked depth. Then put the soft/hard boiled egg holder. Then the eggs in the poaching dish (I recommend wiping a smidge of butter around the cup before you put the eggs in -- works better than Pam). Then the top. Then you hit the button.
Then there's plenty of time to get your toast or english muffin going in the toaster.
I really like the poached eggs. For the soft boiled eggs, make sure your eggs are all about the same size (we had a wierd small one in the bunch that cooked more). You may have to experiment with the amount of water to get it to your liking.
Although it shuts down when the water is boiled off, there is some carryover heat.
Great little product and I saved money buying it from Amazon (Free shipping).
UPDATE: Still a great cooker -- but we had to buy another one. REMEMBER TO UNPLUG IT WHEN YOU'RE DONE. My kitchen is pretty cluttered, and one afternoon while chopping onions, I accidentally hit the go button with the edge of a cutting board. I kept smelling burning plastic, but figured Mom had dropped something in the oven that I couldn't find. After about 45 minutes, I found the source of the smell: the lid was melting onto the bottom element. I unplugged it and tried to get the lid off (figured we might be able to use the poaching tray at least), but I couldn't get it off. I was mad at myself, but went ahead and purchased another one from Amazon.
Customer Review: World's Best Eggs Summary: 5 Stars
I have had an Oster Egg Cooker since the bank's gave them as gifts for opening an account at least 40 years ago. When mine stopped working about 20 years ago, my mother gave me hers which she got at the same time as I got mine. It is just showing signs of "maybe" going out. I have to press it on several times to get it to start. Not wanting to be caught without a cooker, I decided it was time to order a new one. I was so disappointed to find out that Oster has discontinued this style of cooker. I have given it as a gift to my friend, my son, who then gave one to his mother-in-law, and one to a friend. Everyone loves it. I had to take 2 dozen hard boiled eggs to a friends and when she had one egg she called to everyone there that they must have an egg. I said, "It's just an egg." She said it is the best egg I have ever had. It makes peeling so easy and they are cooked to perfection every time. It is great for deviled eggs as they come out looking perfect. The poached eggs are also perfect. Now everyone has poached eggs on toast for breakfast. I had to search for a month before finding this egg cooker. Other brands did not make as many eggs, did not poach, or had poor reviews. The new Oster looks bulky and I have steamers for vegetables. I just wanted my old poacher. I finally found that Amazon had 2! At first it was selling for $99!! Outrageous. It then went to $55 - still way over priced but I guess it is "supply and demand". I was desparate so I ordered it. It works perfectly. I have it put away until my current one finally stops working which could still be awhile but I know I have a great back up.
Customer Review: Poached eggs come out PERFECT! Summary: 5 Stars
Poached eggs come out so easily and perfectly in this! We have used ours VERY frequently for about 10 years to make both poached and hard boiled eggs. For poached eggs, we found some tricks. When you start poaching, wait until there is a little steam and then put a tiny glob of butter or margarine in each cup. Swirl it around to make sure the cup is well coated. That way the egg will slide off the cup easily. Then, we use a plastic utensil (a plastic spoon or knife is fine) to "pop" the egg out, so the teflon does not scratch over time. BE SURE TO TAKE THE EGG OUT AS SOON AS IT POPS, so that it will not stick to the cup. That way you will have perfect eggs, and an extremely easy clean up.
To clean up, I take the cups and just wipe them clean with a paper towel right away. No soap or water is necesary. If you do it right away, after the eggs are out, the cups will be perfectly clean and you will protect the integrity of the surface.
I am SO glad Oster finally started making these again. I have no idea why they stopped.
They are very well made, but do not last forever. Over the years have resorted to buying several used ones from Ebay, since that was the only place we could get them. We are so in love with the PERFECT poached eggs these make, I can not imagine having poached eggs another way. They also make effortless hard boiled eggs. It's also a great gift for couples or families who like poached eggs.
Customer Review: Most fabulous invention Summary: 5 Stars
If you're like me-- and get bored sitting around waiting for an egg to boil... walk away and have an egg thats cracked with white goo coming from the crack--- or pull out too soon and have an almost cooked yolk... This is PERFECT.
You can put in lots of eggs at once--- More than enough for 3 people. Great for salads, breakfast... etc. You decide how you like your eggs-- hard, or easy... Then you fill up the water line (using a glass, as the instructions say not to place under the faucet) that matches your goal. I like my eggs cooked very very well--- so the line inside the cooker (and the directions that I can now toss because the instructions will always be there) says to fill to the outside line. I did--- put in my eggs-- put the lid on-- pushed the button and did my own things until they were complete. They came out PERFECT.
I cleaned the yellow remains with a paper towel. I just wiped it off. I don't know if thats right-- but I figured the devise wasn't supposed to get wet from the faucet-- so I'd use the towel.
I did not try the sunny side up egg thing-- I think they're gross. But it seems that that accessory is easy to clean. You can probably stick it in the dish washer. It's resembles a small metal plate with four sections.
