Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 4207 Electric Wine-Bottle OpenerCustomer Review: A marvel of low tech Summary: 5 Stars
As a person who loathes cheap, clutter, infomercial widgets I bought this out or sheer curiosity imagining it would be returned the same day. This opener is large, requires an electric plug and takes up counter space. But to my surprise it works amazingly well. There is a foil cutter that is stored in the base. The screw enters cleanly and seems to eliminate broken and shredded corks which can be frustrating. Hold the button again and the cork emerges from the device and drops out. I always liked my sturdy and simple stainless steel opener. But this turned out to be a keeper. It's design is contemporary and clean, although it looks like it should do something more profound than just pull a cork. It's also a conversation piece provoking smiles from guests. A pleasant surprise, highly recommended and especially so for a person who lacks hand or wrist strength.
Customer Review: No really, it WORKS Summary: 5 Stars
Got this as a gift, and as most people here, I expected the worst. It works, it really works, and works well. I was thinking it wouldn't have enough torque to do the job, but it does so with no problem. Real corks, plastic corks, anything. Only occasionally does it stop before getting the cork all the way out, but a little wiggle and out she comes. My only real "complaint" if you can call it that is that it has a cheap sound to it, kinda like the geartrain in a kid's toy. Obviously with the kind of torque it's producing, there's going to be some noise, but cordless drills (even the small pocket sized ones) don't sound like this.
I still far prefer this to the Rabbit Screwpull I was using before. My folks had a stand mounted one (the screwpull) and they've retired theirs. Get one, you won't be dissapointed!
Customer Review: Excellent Bottle Opener! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought two of these wine bottle openers for gifts two years ago. One went to my parents, and one to my husband. We've used it probably 1-2 times weekly since then and have NEVER had a problem with it. It pulls out natural corks and plastic corks equally well. It's so easy to use! I remember that we decided we had to open a bottle of wine right after DH unwrapped his gift. It worked so smoothly and I was so shocked, that I immediately dug through a drawer until I found my Pampered Chef wine bottle opener and promptly threw it in the garbage. My parents love theirs too. Unlike us, they don't keep it on the charger, but they can go several months between charges. (They're probably more like every-other-week wine drinkers.)
This is easily one of my favorite wine-related purchases I've ever made!
Customer Review: Had my opener for 1.5 years nw Summary: 5 Stars
Just to say that this thing works great. No problems like some of the reviewers have had. Bubba posted just before me about the battery problems and unplugging the charger. I haven't seen my battery run down, but I only open a couple or 3 bottles a week and the opener goes right back into the charging unit. However, today I unplugged it. I can't hurt. Ray
Update Dec. 1, 2010
Last week, the wife informed me that the wine opener was acting like the batteries were run down. I checked it out and sure enough it was. I unplugged it and used a pencle eraser to clean the contacts. Didn't help. We used the thing for 2-4 bottles of wine per week, and kept it plugged in most of the time. It always worked as adverised and I'm now shopping for a new one. Can't beat the price. Ray
Customer Review: A really great tool for wine enthusiasts. Not just convenient. Functional! Summary: 5 Stars
As it happens, I am in the wine business and I open a lot of bottles, between tastings, pairings and my own love of a good glass in the evening. I decided to give these Oster Electric Wine Bottle Openers as gifts to friends and clients this year. Everyone just loves them. It might seem extraordinarily lazy to buy a product to avoid the little bit of work that a conventional corkscrew requires. Maybe so. May daughter bought mine for me because she is a sweet heart. However, the constant pressure (applied by a powerful motor with a rechargable battery) never breaks a cork. At least, it hasn't in the 3 years that I have been using mine. It is simple and uncomplicated. I can't say that about the conventional units that I use when I am away from the house. My daughter is also one smart cookie!
