Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 3883 Belgian Wafflemaker, Chrome

Customer Review: Affordable, Easy to Use, Non-Belgian Style Waffle Maker
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used this Oster waffle maker for over a year without any problems. It heats up relatively fast with a quick recovery time. I use a boxed generic pancake mix and follow the waffle instructions - same as for pancakes just add 1/3 cup oil to prevent sticking. All I do is plug it in to preheat, mix my batter, when the green light turns on, I spray lightly with cooking spray (I only spray for the first waffle) and add my batter being careful not to overfill and wait until the green light comes back on. The highest heat setting makes them a little too dark for me so I back it off a little. Also as you are cooking a large batch of waffles, the iron will retain more heat and you may need to back off on the darkness control just a little bit. I place the already baked waffles in a toaster oven around 250 degrees to keep warm while the rest of the batch is being prepared. Clean up is easy with a paper towel when cool. If any batter spilled over when cooking I just use a soft bristled brush to remove the dried batter. NOTE: This is called a Belgian waffle maker but the depth is that of a non-Belgian style waffle. The heating element is 850 watts. For the Oster flip true Belgian waffle maker look for Oster model #3874.

This is the second waffle maker I've owned. The previous one (krupps) was okay, but it just stopped working one day, so I decided to go with a different brand this time, and I must say-- this model is superior. The waffles always come out crispy and delectable and I love the round shape. I've made waffles almost every weekend for the past 2 months (my roommate requests them). I usually use pancake mix mixed with vegetable oil for the batter, and I haven't had the slightest problem with them sticking, despite what some previous reviewers have stated. In fact, there's hardly anything to wipe off when I'm done, because the waffles come off so cleanly. Also, though the device doesn't have a ready light, I've found that that feature was superfluous to begin with. The waffles generally take the same exact time to cook each time, so I guage their readiness by the clock and, if I ever have any concerns about how cooked they are, I can just open the iron and peek in. It's not difficult at all. The only drawback is that you can only make one waffle at a time. But that's a small price to pay for delicious waffles!

I bought this waffle iron for $15 at Target after returning a much pricier Calaphon one to the store after it quit working not long after I bought it.

This Oster waffle iron does everything I want it to do, which is to evenly cook waffles and then release them without sticking. The earlier reviewers said that they used the highest setting and cooked the waffles for about 4 minutes. I tried this the first few times and thought it made the waffles too dry.

So I turned it to two notches down from the highest setting and cooked the waffles for two minutes. They were fluffy and moist. You will need to experiment a few times to see how you want it to do your waffles. Although it doesn't have a timer, I just set a kitchen timer.

Oh, and here's our favorite waffle recipe: 2 cups Bisquick, 1 egg, 3 tablespoons oil, and one small (10 oz) bottle of club soda. Sometimes I substitute a cup of another waffle mix (whole wheat, blue corn, etc) and then just use one cup of the Bisquick.

Customer Review: One of the best waffle makers you can buy.

I just recently bought my Oster Belgian Wafflemaker and I am really pleased with it. Its predecessor (not an Oster) was purchased because it was inexpensive. Well you pay for what you get and that one did not last very long in our house. For one thing the waffle grooves were not very deep and it tended to burn the middle while the sides were raw. Not true with the Oster. Unlike another reviewer I find this wafflemaker DOES cook evenly throughout. I enjoy making waffles for my husband on weekends and it is important they come out well. Well I paid a little more for the Oster but it works perfectly. There is even a dial on top of the wafflemaker, just like a toaster, that if you would like a darker waffle you put the dial on darker or if you want a real light waffle you put on the lighter setting. Anyway my mother got me started on buying Osters. She has a food processor she just loves. I now own an Oster Electric Griddle and this Belgian Wafflemaker. I highly recommend to all you homemade Belgian waffle lovers!

I was looking for a waffle maker and saw one on sale for Black Friday. After coming home and seeing the many bad reviews, I decided to return it. Saw this Oster waffle maker in what looked to be in excellent condition at Goodwill, yes Goodwill. For only 7 dollars I decided to buy it although I was not expecting much from some of the bad reviews on here. The next day I tried it. Boy was I surprised. It heated it amazingly quick, within the first 2 minutes it was ready and the waffles were done it seemed right away, within 2 minutes. Very surprising since even the manual I found online said it should take about 4 minutes if I remember correctly. I didn't actually time it but it was really quick. The waffles came out perfect on both sides. Makes me wonder why someone donated such a wonderful waffle maker. I truly believe that the reviewers who complained about theirs not heating quickly, taking too long to cook, etc. probably just got a bad one.
