Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Slap Chop

Customer Review: Surprisingly good!
Summary: 4 Stars

I am embarrassed to say we might be Slap Chop converts. WE bought my mother TWO different electric mini-chopper/ blenders over the last year and she wouldn't use either of them (Magic Bullet and the Black and Decker Ergo Chopper). The magic bullet 'mushed' tender veggies and she never even tried the highly rated Ergo. Swore she wanted a Slap Chop. She HATES dicing and mincing for salads and whatnot by hand.

We made fun of both her and the reviews but eventually bought her one. She LOVES it. I tried it and I LOVE it. What the hay?!? This thing actually works exactly as advertisted. Tried in on hard baby carrots, tomatoes, onions and green pepper. Worked fine on all of them.
Did some stuff get stuck in the blades? Only if we didn't whack it hard enough the first time. Second whack was enough to dislodge and continue the chopping fun! Not sure about the people who complained it hurt their hand - didn't bother us and we were being pretty brutal. So my advice is don't knock it until you try it! IF you hate it then, well it isn't for you but we are now chagrined believers! Happy Slapping!
P.S. Graty is just 'ok' and I gave the SC only 4 stars because I think it is more a $10 item than a $15 one.

Customer Review: Works Very Well, Could Be More Polished
Summary: 4 Stars

This cuts very well, you should read the directions first for specific items. If you cut an onion with a knife against me and this, it would blow you away. You have to do onions skin side down then after chopping just pull the skin away like the commercial and its ready to drop in the pan. Tomatoes skin side up.

The only gripe is the there is a separator that is supposed to knock loose things that get caught in the blades. It is thin plastic that sometimes just bends and allows food to get stuck. It also doesn't slide smoothly back on after removal and washing.

The size is decent for most things, but things about the size of medium tomatoes need to be cut in half first. If you stick a huge tomato / potato in there, it will obviously become a mess, and that sounds like what most complaints are about here.

I definitely like the product and can recognize a piece of crap pretty quick. I don't hesitate to use this for cooking, and in fact will delay cooking for several minutes to find a piece its missing.

Also I had the quick chop a long time ago, and this is much sharper and better cutting ability, plus the fold out cleaning is a plus.

Customer Review: Use it right
Summary: 4 Stars

It doesn't work if you don't slap it. It's called a slap chop for a reason. Slap that sob and it will chop and rotate. Works great on oreo cookies for ice cream. Havn't tried it on soft textured food yet, but I did try it on grilled chicken which has left me impressed that it cut it up into fine pieces. Again, this is not a [...] pump, you have to slap it with some force. Faster a blade moves on any tool the better it will cut.

It only gets 4 stars. Materials used for the design are kinda cheap. Can't complain for [...] bucks though. About ordering these products and paying shipping? Why would you do such a thing. Go to Walgreens or Walmart. They usually get the as seen on tv products pretty quickly and you pay the same amount pre-shipping without having to pay shipping. Shamwows - 20bucks Slapchop-[...] bucks.

On the other spectrum people are complaining about the shamwows. Only they are usually the ones who are misusing the product. Have to use them damp. SLAP SLAP SLAP IT!

Customer Review: I like it
Summary: 4 Stars

It's simple.

Relatively easy to clean.

Doesn't take up much room.

Relatively safe.

Self contained food compartment, so foods don't go flying.

It's a lot simpler than the contraption I was using before.

What's not to like?

You need to cut the food into manageable pieces before you start chopping, and then strike it firmly. The more you strike, the finer the food gets. I use it on my polymer cutting board. Besides a good sharp knife or two, it's all I need to prepare the finer foods for 2 people.

Normal cleaning is as simple as rinsing off, and perhaps soaking in a soapy solution for a few minutes, then allowing to dry.

Occasionally food not cut to the right size will clog up the blade, especially potatoes. But this is generally easily remedied with a firm slap. Hey, slap chop. Get it..

Customer Review: It does what I want it to
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this because I put a lot of onion on everything, so although I only use this for onions, I use it on a regular basis and it works really well every time. I have no idea why it wouldn't nicely chop through onions for other people but what I do for an average sized onion is, using a knife, I cut the onion into 4, then place the onion with the outer layer against the cutting board and then chop it as finely as I want using the Slap Chop, later taking away the outermost layer because you can't chop through that. I was iffy about buying this thing because of all the negative reviews, but as for what I want it to do, it does it well - I haven't yet been disappointed. It's also pretty easy to clean.

update: I've also used it to chop up broccoli and the Slap Chop does an equally awesome job chopping up broccoli.
