Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Old Stone Oven 4467 14-Inch by 16-Inch Baking StoneCustomer Review: Three years and no problems Summary: 5 Stars
I bought(2)of these in 2005 for ten dollars less each here at amazon. It was a good price then. Too bad it has gone up so much. Nevertheless, I believe they are great for pizza and bread. I have always left them in the oven and take them out to scrape them clean on occasion. I figure they are heat cleaned. I tried the unglazed tile (home depot) in a pan years ago but they did not create a crisp crust. They do not absorb moisture which is why they can be used outside in cold climates..not brutal, but cold. In addition, they are not not for eating off of. Maybe it does not matter but I would not assume they are safe. These stones from Old Stone are great and make a great pizza at 500 deg. and preheated for almost one hour.
Customer Review: Great stone Summary: 5 Stars
I chose this Old Stone Oven because of Cook's Illustrated recommendation and because my 10-year-old, extremely used Pampered Chef stone finally broke. This stone is *much* heavier than my old one, and I love the rectangular shape because it gives more leeway in actually getting the pizza on it in a 500 degree oven. I've had a lot of edges hang over and spill with a round stone. My crust turns out as good, if not better, than with my old stone. Amazon's price is excellent compared to other places for the same model. Also, it came packaged *extremely* well with layers of packing and it was even double-boxed. It seems Amazon finally addressed the problem of customers receiving broken stones.
Customer Review: Amazing Results! Summary: 5 Stars
I selected this stone after America's Test Kitchen rated it #1. It's fantastic! My pizzas and french bread are gourmet good! Read the directions carefully when you receive it. Messy chef that I am, I let the cheese melt onto the stone (never a good idea with these stones). I used a copper scouring pad and warm water to clean it and it turned-out fine. Like previous reviews have stated, it will blacken/discolor... just let it be. My pizza's cook perfectly at 450 degrees. I do let the stone pre-heat for about 30 minutes. Pizza cooks mighty fast at that well-preheted temperature so keep an eye on it. The size is perfect. I wouldn't buy a smaller one. Enjoy!
Customer Review: Wonderful baking stone Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for my daughter, a baker. As luck would have it, my stove thermometer broke just in time for her visit home for Christmas. Prior to opening the baking stone, with the oven temp fluctuating as much as 200 degrees, everything was uncooked or burnt. Once we used the stone, it smoothed out even that much fluctuation to an amazing degree. Once I bought a new stove and could really test it out, she raved about the quality of the bread and other baked goods and is wondering why she didn't get one long ago.
In reference to the comments about packaging, they have this thing packaged amazingly well now. It came in perfect condition.
Customer Review: At last! A home-made pizza worth eating! Summary: 5 Stars
I was helped in choosing this pizza stone by the hundreds of online reviews and suggestions posted by people from all over. Well, they were all right. Excellent item. I bought two stones and used them simultaneously for the first two homemade pizzas of my life... DELICIOUS! As others have suggested, I never remove the stone from the oven, and lately I just placed a pan containing the dough for an olive focaccia and it came out perfectly done. I am convinced that the stone works its magic also when not used to bake directly on it. I am extremely happy so far and I'd highly recommend this item. Buon Appetito!
