Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Old Stone Oven 4467 14-Inch by 16-Inch Baking Stone

Customer Review: Quality & Substance
Summary: 5 Stars

This hearth baking stone is superb high quality -- quite substantial & well-made. First time baking Italian bread on stone, according to the included recipe, has convinced me ever more to do so. Even baking with crisp crust, without soggy centre, is the evident reward. Ready to use after quick hot water rinse. Customer Review: Baking Stone Extremely Well Packed
Summary: 5 Stars

Old Stone Oven 14-Inch by 16-Inch Baking Stone

I was hesitant to order this baking stone because of the reviews saying it arrived broken. These reviews were as recent as last spring - so I don't know if the packaging has been redesigned but mine came through fine.

It struck me as extremely well packed. It's in a heavy-duty corrugated cardboard box, held securely in place by corrugated cardboard braces. Then packed as other Amazon shipments are in a larger box, padded with crumpled brown paper. Shipped UPS.

Of course, though it's called a "stone" it's actually a ceramic tile, so it is breakable. But mine came through fine and I can't wait to use it.

Customer Review: Greatest Pizza Stone!
Summary: 5 Stars

FWIW......I bought one of these stones for pizzas over two years ago. I NEVER take it out of my oven (I keep it on the bottom rack - low). My LG oven doesnt have a heating element on the bottom so the stone doesnt block any direct heat while cooking other things on other racks.

I even broil items on the top rack with the stone on the bottom. Never a crack. I pull the stone out only when it gets dirty (from pizza or bread) to clean, and NEVER put anything cold or cool on it when hot.

I also LOVE how the stone retains heat in the oven when I open it, allowing the oven to get back up to temp quickly, after the door has been closed.

BTW.. I never put anything but pizza and bread on this stone. Pots, pans and other items go on the racks.

Customer Review: Holds the heat, makes my oven great
Summary: 5 Stars

I do use this large stone, on the lowest rack of my oven, for baking bread, pizza, and cookies, ALWAYS on a sheet of parchment paper, no matter what I bake. I use parchment paper for baking any product with a large amount of flour. I keep the stone in my oven for all baking because, after the longer heat-up time, the temperature in my oven stays constant through every cycle of the electric element heating up and cooling down.
I saw on a PBS breads cooking show that parchment paper can be used on a stone in any hot oven, over the 420 degrees F of the Reynolds brand paper; up to 475-500 degrees F is what I saw. The paper can turn brown and black, get crisp, and still be in one piece. You throw away parchment paper after use every time anyway.

Customer Review: Wasn't broken when it arrived!
Summary: 5 Stars

This stone wasn't broken when it arrived as other people's have been. I have used it a lot and leave it in my oven when not in use. It is suggested to heat the stone to 500 degrees or so and then turn it down to the recipe's direction. I have done that and it works well for pizzas and breads. I have made cookies on the stone and find that heating the oven to a high temperature prior to baking burns the bottoms of the cookies. I now just set the oven for the required temperature and all is great. I already have many stains on the stone from use but it's no big deal. Others have commented on the smell from the stone when it is heated. At first I noticed a slight scent but it wasn't a preoblem. Overall, I'm really enjoying it.
