Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Nordic Ware Microwave Rice Cooker 8 CupCustomer Review: Loooovvvee it, perfect for a college student Summary: 5 Stars
Left home, missed the convenience of a REAL electric rice cooker, but this is the SAME THING!
Pros: Cooks rice without me having to worry about burning it on a stove. It's just the same as a rice cooker...you measure rice, water, put it in the microwave and forget about it. I guess the only extra steps you do have to worry about is that when it's done, you do have to go close the steamer lid and wait a few more minutes.
Cons: Virtually non-existent...but I must list them anyway. It is slightly a pain to clean the entire thing when I'm done compared to an electronic cooker. The lid comes apart in two pieces and I have to clean that too. (I don't have a dishwasher so that's why I mentioned this). For some reason, my little veggie bowl does not look like the one in the picture. I haven't used it for veggies or pasta yet but mine is shaped more like a bowl. When you first take it out of the microwave, there will be some water settling on the top and might get it on yourself. It may scald you but...not badly since it's just a little.
My advice: can get a little soggy but you just gotta adjust and use less water the next time. All microwaves are different. The instructions calls for 1 cup of rice per 1 1/2 cup of water for 10-12 minutes. I use 2 cups of rice per 2 1/2 cups of water for 12 minutes and I'm still finding it a lil soggy but it gets better every time.
Customer Review: Love the Rice Cooker/Vegetable Steamer Summary: 5 Stars
Well, it's been a month and I finally made some brown rice.... and my favorite, steamed broccoli. The rice (TJs Brown Basmati) I cooked for 20 minutes at 50% power level and followed instructions on bag which said 2 Cups water, 1 Cup rice. After 20 minutes, there was still water left and rice was still hard so I cooked for an additional 12 minutes at 50% level and that did the trick. It was perfect... I did let it sit for a few minutes and it fluffed up beautifully. As for the broccoli, I followed instructions 3-4 minutes on high, not vented... then let it sit closed for an additional 3-4 minutes, so I did 3 and 3, because I like it just barely softened and very green. Not sure I saved much time (15 mins total), but I didn't have to watch either of these. I was doing other things while they cooked away. Maybe I'll buy another so I can do them sort of simultaneously, as this is a favorite meal. A great value too.
Customer Review: Works fine for brown rice! Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted a simple way to make long grain brown basmati rice in the evenings after work and this has worked out well for me. Despite comments made in some other reviews, I have never had a plastic smell or taste. It took some experimentation to get the brown rice to come out like I wanted it, soft but not sticky with every grain seperate. Here's my formula:
- Use 3 to 3.5 cups of water per cup of rice.
- Rinse before cooking to remove starch and prevent boil-over.
- Bring water to a boil for about 10 minutes on full power uncovered.
- Reduce power to 60% and simmer uncovered for 30 to 35 minutes.
- Fluff rice and let sit covered for 5 minutes.
This is almost an hour but still quicker and takes less attention than my old method of pre-soaking and cooking on the stove top. If you are in hurry or just prefer it, it also makes good white rice.
Customer Review: Works Great! Summary: 5 Stars
I have a great little microwave, a Sears brand that I bought in 2003. This cooker works fine in it. The white rice was perfect...not sticky, dry, or mushy. I also followed the directions for veggies and cooked both potatoes and broccoli in it (at different times). I did add a couple of minutes to the recommended cooking time for these items. I also made sure that the pieces were chopped uniformly and not too large. They filled the container and therefore tend to need more time. I think this little cooker is ideal for two people. I wouldn't try to use it for a family, as it really isn't big enough. As to the lid closing issues, you just need to make sure it is snapped down all the way onto the rim, and the flaps should close over the handles with no problem. Don't overdo it on the amount of water. Stick to the recommended guidelines and you'll have no problem.
Customer Review: Quick, easy-to-use and hassle-free cooker Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw this cooker in action at a friend's house and thought I would get one for myself as a temporary measure till I buy a good electric cooker. Once I got this though, it's been so convenient that I've had no plans to get anything else.
You do need to do some trial-and-error to figure out the right measure of water to pour (as this depends on the rice used) and the time to keep (as this depends on the microwave settings). Sometimes a little water bubbles up and collects at the top of the cooker, so you need to be a little careful when taking it out of the microwave. But once you get the measurements figured, the rice is perfect every time. When I need to cook fast, I mix in some rice, vegetables and spices all in the cooker and pop it into the microwave and hey presto! There's delicious food ready in 15 minutes!
