Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of My Weigh KD-7000 Digital Stainless-Steel Food Scale

Customer Review: Do -not- buy this
Summary: 1 Stars

I'm a constant home baker, and I needed a new scale, so I picked this one because the specs looked pretty good and it was a decent price. So, I take it out of the package, I'm looking at it, pull up the plastic cover and it breaks off. Not a great start, but hey, I didn't really need the cover anyway and maybe it was just my fault. Also once you get it in person, you realize that almost the whole thing is made out of cheap plastic. The picture they have makes it look metallic and shiny, but no, it's plastic and feels like it would shatter into pieces if you ever dropped it. And the stainless steel top piece is only a thin piece of metal over more cheap plastic. But my real problem came when I tested it out. No matter how heavy the thing you're weighing, it's almost always wildly inaccurate. When I measure ounces, it's easily off by 3-4. When I measure pounds, it's still off by 2-3 pounds. Simply lifting up the item and re-placing it in the same spot can wildly change the weight. And if you move it into a different spot on the scale, once again, wildly different results. After a couple of tries I've found this ugly paperweight to be completely useless for any kind of cooking, compared to the much more accurate option of simply guessing.

Customer Review: Precise to the gramm !
Summary: 5 Stars

I thought this KD-7000 food scale is promoting the 1 gramm precision as a gimmick, but hey, it's true. I did weigh a piece of waxed paper thinking that it is too light to tip the balance. But no, it displayed 2 gramms. I didn't know that the paper is still heavy.

I did not own precise/standardized weights to verify it's precision but you can do it easily with several random objects.
For example, I took 3 apple fruits and weighted them one by one, noting down each weight. I Add their weights together.
Now I put all 3 apples on the scale and weighed them together this time. A precise balance will show the total measured weight matching exactly the summ of computed individual apples weights.

In my test I found that the total weight fell exactly on the computed summ of all apples' weights.
Just amazing ! Just make sure to place the scale on a perfectly flat counter or surface and it works fine. The "tare" feature is very nice, the scale knows how to extract the container weight having the food place inside it when you hit TARE button. This way you get only the food weight every time. Please also note that it is important to have fresh batteries in it, just in case if those coming with the scale could having been stored for too long. The scale has an automatic shut-off so the batteries will last for a long time.

Switch from different displays (such as gramms only or gramm and kilos) to ounces or ounces and pounds. I don't know how this food scale does it but it does just great. This is our first digital food scale and I am very satisfied. I am sure there are pther good scales but this one works perfectly for me. Just do the test described above and if it pass it, you have a fine scale. I like the blue display for some reason, is very pleasant and easy on your eyes. Buy it and enjoy it.

Customer Review: Good for deal for a basic scale
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this product because I wanted something that I could use to weigh my food intake and also for cooking purposes. I also thought if I was going to spend $30-$40 on a scale I would look at what amazon had to offer instead of just buying a scale at Target or some place. I am happy with this scale because it measures up to 15lb and displays in metric scale as well, whereas department store scales may only go up to 3lbs. It also has a calibration feature that I have yet to mess with, however, it seems a little sketchy to use only one mass to calibrate this machine. A minimum of two masses should have been used to get the linear relationship between the different masses that you would measure. I do work in a calibration lab but not one that calibrates masses so I could be wrong about the number of points you would need for an accurate mass measurement (i.e. don't quote me).

My only real issue with the product is that on the picture the base looks like a heavy, sturdy structure, which you might think is close to the weight of a small dense book. However, the base is actually a light plastic that may seem somewhat flimsy but is relatively durable as long as you don't hit it with anything too hard. Other than that the product works great, it is made in China if that matters to you, and the stainless steal is solid but a little hard to get completely shiny again if you spill on it.

All-in-all I am happy with this product and would buy it again if I had to do it all over. I even saw that some people buy this for making soap, which I think I might try (perhaps while watching Fight Club).

Customer Review: Don't like cover
Summary: 3 Stars

This scale works pretty well, although I was weighing some chocolate for making truffles this Christmas, and the weight on the scale did not match the weight printed on the label for the chocolate.I do not like the plastic cover, as you have to lift it to push the button to turn it on.
