Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Messermeister 8-1/2-Inch Take-Apart Utlility Shear

Customer Review: Very good shears but...
Summary: 4 Stars

I have not had problems cutting anything with these shears, including plastic that is not snapped tight. A vast improvement over the shears that came with a knife set. What dragged them down to a 4 star rating is that they do seperate a little easily. The nut that holds the center peg in place does work its way loose and ocassionally needs tightening and the lid prying tool/screw driver is a touch on the sharp side and I have poked my hand a couple time removing the shears from our storage block.

But for a cutting tool it is first rate!

Customer Review: Great design for a right-hand dominant user
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw these on sale on Amazon for a price that was too good for me to ignore. I bought them for the kitchen. I have several other kitchen sheers, which I use, but these are the most comfortable. They are ergonomically designed to fit on the right hand, so I'm not sure you lefties would enjoy them quite as much. The blades are really sharp and the twig-cutter design makes them useful to cut through chicken bones.

I think where they will really shine is dismembering and extracting lobsters or crabs. The silicone or silicone-like lined grips are likely to function better when the shears get greasy, and they will open small bottle caps quite easily. Kudos for the design and quality manufacture.

Let me also emphasize these are "utility" shears, so I will probably have to buy a second set for my wife with her sewing and projects.

Customer Review: Wouldn't purchase again!
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought these because of all the glowing reviews and it seems like the pair I have is always dirty. But, I have to agree with the last review. They aren't sharp. They have lots of little gadgets attached, but I'd rather have a good sharp pair without all the extra stuff. I'll try to sharpen them and see if they are any better.

Customer Review: Not that great
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought these because Cooks Illustrated gave them a very positive review. I bought several pairs figuring I could give them as stocking stuffers to my adult children who all are fairly serious cooks. I tried them and they were mediocre at best. They weren't sharp and it was difficult to cut even boneless chicken breasts with them. It was like the scissors were gumming the meat. I returned all but the pair I used. I have others from Chicago Cutlery (which also come apart for cleaning) which seem to be much stronger and sharper.

Customer Review: Open at least 3.75" from tip to tip and do not come loose - Solid!
Summary: 5 Stars

Just received these today. First off, they feel solid as compared to the kitchen and cooking scissors that came with my knife block.

CLARIFICATION ON ANOTHER REVIEW REGARDING HOW FAR THEY OPEN BEFORE COMING COMING APART FOR CLEANING: I remember seeing a review (the "HORRIBLE" review) that said they only open 1-2 centimeters before they come apart. This is not true. I have a large hand and with the scissors open as wide as I can open them while I'm holding them with one hand in scissors position, they do not come apart. I measured from blade tip to tip and the scissors open 3.75" and do not fall apart. If you open a little more, then they come apart for cleaning. This is not 1 to 2 centimeters like someone else incorrectly stated. You can easily cut chickens, etc. without worrying they're going to fall apart.

Very happy with this purchase.
