Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Medelco 12-Cup Glass Stovetop Whistling Kettle

Customer Review: As steady as a clock
Summary: 5 Stars

We have owned several of these glass tea pots. We love them, because you can always see "what's cookin'". The only reason we don't have our original one is because I left it (and it's successor) on the stove while I whittled away the hours until I smelled a strange burning plastic aroma. Apparently it's not a good idea to burn up the water in them and just continue letting them stay on an active burner. The good news: neither one of the ones I fried exploded (only God knows why!). The water heats up quickly on both electric and gas burners. If you have an older electric burner it's a good idea to use the included wire adapter, but if you have a newer glass stovetop it's not even necessary. We have our third and (hopefully) our last great glass teapot.

Customer Review: Boil, boil, no toil, no trouble
Summary: 5 Stars

What took me so long? For years, I have struggled with tin, aluminum, and stainless steel kettles - they all eventually get rusty inside. You can't reach in there, you can't see in there. But this Medelco 12-cup stovetop whistling kettle is the best. Just enough water for a small pot of tea or two large mugs. Boils up fast with a low whistle not the usual great screech that knocks your eardrums out. It is just clear, heat-proof glass that can easily be hand-cleaned or put in the dishwasher. No worry about rust. Very easy to use and keep clean. I love it, and will never use another kettle. Also has a nice design and shape. Looks good on the stove, and since it is glass, no worry about matching colors or décor. And all for only $12.

Customer Review: Yay! A kettle you can clean!
Summary: 5 Stars

All of the whistling kettles, that I have owned, had an opening that didn't allow for proper cleaning of the kettle. I never really thought about it, to tell you the truth. One day I was inspired to shine a flashlight into my stainless kettle and was horrified at the deposits that covered the inside.

This kettle is wonderful. I can see (plain as day) when the mineral deposits are starting to build up, on the inside, and I can easily get my hand and a scrub pad down inside the kettle. The handle is comfortable and does not get hot.

I only wish that you weren't required to remove the top to pour out the water but, I'm so pleased with this kettle that, I can live with this slight draw-back.

I love glass!

Customer Review: Metallic-Taste Free!
Summary: 5 Stars

Yay, no more metallic-tinged water! The pot comes with a wire coil shaped like a 3-leaf clover to place on electric burners, to diffuse the heat contact to the glass. I'm not completely convinced that the breathy whistle qualifies as 'piercingly loud,' but it gets the job done. The lid has a handle to minimize the risk of steam burns while removing it in order to pour (no pouring through the lid), and a shaped pour-spout minimizes drizzling. The "Diner-Flair" style is either cool or slightly disappointing, depending on my mood, but I don't drink straight from the kettle, so 'tis okay! Very good product; made in Connecticut. Medelco Inc. (not to be confused with the medical equipment makers) has a website, too.

Customer Review: Love this teapot!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the BEST teapot! You don't have to worry about it rusting like metal pots and there's no funny metal taste to the water. It's super easy to care for and clean! I'm very happy that the glass seems to be fairly durable, too. It's easy to fill and know exactly how much water is in inside - unlike metal teapots. I read the other reviews about the handle getting hot and I have noticed that if I fill the water level high, then the handle can get a little hot, however, if I don't fill the water level high, I don't have any problems. The only negative I have with this pot is that the whistle is pretty soft, but that's not a huge concern of mine. I'm very happy with this purchase and very happy with the price!!
