Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Medelco 12-Cup Glass Stovetop Whistling Kettle

Customer Review: I found it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was delighted to find a replacement for my Gemco 'Whistler'water kettles that were discontinued due to a defect causing the plastic casing to melt. Invariable one leaves the kettle on without the lid and the water boils away causing the bottom to eventually crack. If you are compulsive about putting on the lid especially when leaving the stove unattended this little glass kettle should last a lifetime. The stainless steel band holding the sturdy plastic plastic handle are much stronger on this model and inspire confidence when pouring. The whistle sound is somewhat weak but I am grateful that it is not piercing. The lid must be removed in order to pour but this can be accomplished by a flip of the thumb.

The advantage of having clear glass, being able to see the amount of water, the lack of residue and being dishwasher safe more than makes up for being certain that the bottom is dry, not filling it to the top (German coffee cups are smaller), placing the kettle on the smaller burner (with the tripod on electric and glasstop stoves)so that the handle remains cool and placing the whisler lid so that it does not burn dry.

Delivery from Goodmans was prompt and was well packed. For the life of me I cannot figure out why there are so many differences in price because I do not see any differerence in the $14.99 model. At any rate the price is unbeatable and I strongly suggest NOT TO BUY ONE - BUY SEVERAL!

Customer Review: clean and mean
Summary: 5 Stars

Went through 3 standard metal kettles in the last few years. They always start to build up the residue inside, you forget to drain excess water and it gets gross, the bottom starts to separate and form internal water and calcium-filled chambers that leak into the boiling water... etc.

This glass kettle has had NONE of these problems, boils surprisingly fast, and is just a pleasure to use by comparison to a conventional aluminum kettle. I wont go back.

I noted some of the other reviews who were critical of the "hot handle" - I have not had a problem using my bare hands to pick up the boiling kettle from the handle even 1 time. Its only barely warm, certainly not hot. I suspect some people are just putting this thing on a burner with a VERY wide burner circle and turning up the heat to the max, so that the flames go up and around the sides of the kettle. I mean come on - that's a foolish way to heat ANYTHING, not just a tea kettle.

I heat it on medium or so, whatever the best flame is so that most of the flame is actually STILL UNDER the object I'm trying to heat (because I understand simple concepts...), and this heats up very quickly with zero handle hotness.

For the price, sanitary use, convenience, etc: this gets my highest recommendation.

Customer Review: I believe the search is over...
Summary: 5 Stars

As the title above indicates I may have found my ideal teapot. Oh, I searched, tried the one from jcpenny, had the plastic flap over the spout break. Bought another metal one, the handle was bare metal and I just loved the sensation when I grabbed it after it had been heating for awhile.
Ok I thought lets get creative, lets go copper! Yes paid 50 for a nice copper teapot, oops covered in lacquer which I had to remove but I did this. Since it's cold and dry now I sometimes let some water boil just to let steam into the air (poor mans humidifier?) but the copper pot didn't whistle so I forget it and it cooked all the water out. The spout was soldered on and that had fallen off, it was done for. Found this pot, it's glass so that is a pleasant switch, no metal, can see inside. Keep it on the small burner and it heats quick, handle doesn't even get warm. Top pops right off, no steam burns, nice pour, damn this thing seems glitch free. This is my third cup of tea with it and I am so pleased that I just bought another as a backup. Time will be the ultimate judge but thus far it seems as close to the perfect teapot as I could imagine and/or hope for.

Customer Review: Quality, Simple, Affordable
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this as a replacement to a traditional stainless steel kettle that began to rust and leave deposits in my water after boiling.

I use a kettle each morning to boil water for my french press coffee and oatmeal. With my previous kettle, I had to measure water in a separate measuring cup for my coffee and oatmeal, then poured it into the kettle for boiling. This kettle eliminates having to use a separate measuring cup because it has dash marks 3-7. I'm not exactly sure what the each of the numbers translate to cups or oz.'s-wise, but I know that dash 5 is 24 oz and dash 7 is about 27 oz. This kettle boils water efficiently without any traces of anything iffy--just as a good kettle should. The handle stays cool enough to the touch with bare hands, although I recommend using oven mitts with ANY kettle to avoid potential scalding.

The manufacturer's suggest boiling water on medium heat/flame. This means it takes longer to reach a boil. It takes approx. 10 min. to boil 27 oz. of water on my gas cook top. My previous kettle could take high heat and only took 5 min. for the same amount of water.

Customer Review: Watch the water boil!
Summary: 5 Stars

Have used this kettle daily for about six months and highly recommend. Perfect for those who prefer to avoid the metallic taste imparted by stainless or porcelain-clad products. It's easy to clean (dishwasher safe for those who prefer that method) and I like the "visibility" factor. Used over medium-high heat (gas range), I have had no issues with handle becoming hot. While the carafe holds 64-oz. filled to brim, manufacturer recommends a capacity of 48-oz. (See the Amazon-provided photo of carafe.) Note that the 12 "cup" capacity listed on box, and in Amazon's description, is based on a European cup size (4 oz.) and not the standard US cup size (8 oz). Still, 48-oz. of hot water goes a long way in making multiple cups of tea/coffee. The whistle is loud enough to hear over family noise and a room away. All in all, a good buy at a good price.
