Customer Review: I Hate The Stove, Makes Relearning to Cook a Breeze, Add to Any Kitchen
Summary: 5 Stars
Background: I haven't used my stove in years. Its an older model from the 90's, so energy efficiency was not optimal, and I LIKE low electric bills. I was partying with my sister on my Birthday at her place, and she popped out some Split Pea Soup leftover from a Crock Pot I'd given her some Holidays ago. I was impressed, and wanted my own.
In addition, I wasn't eating that healthy, nor that many fresh foods - since microwaving involved pizzas, burritos, corn dogs, Banquet Frozen Dinners, Yuck. So I wanted a cookbook also. Both this Crock Pot and the Cookbook showed up a week later from Amazon.
Current: This was going to be a learning experience for me. First, pick a few recipes, and buy ingredients. Learning about Pantry Stuff was task consuming, but I was astonished at what I could pick up from Winco (including a few of my old Microwave standbys) for $116. I was set to go.
Pros:
You save MUCHO electricity by using only a microwave and the cooker. Use the Oven for Storage.
Starting with simple recipes, It takes a half hour at most to prep and start cooking.
Easy to clean and use (bought an Olive Oil non-stick spray). Just soak and rinse out with soapy water.
Makes more than I thought, will modify some of the recipes, and have left overs.
If you make a mistake, or forget an ingredient, you are still good to go with a healthy meal.
You can stock up on large quantities of staples, and always have a use for them, saving food dollars in the long run.
I didn't experience that smell from being new that was described in the instructions.
I shaved down my cooking time 2 hours by cooking low recipes on high for 1 hour.
Cons:
I would have preferred a 3 quart, but as it turns out, this will still do.
Learning to cook is a challenge, but worth the effort. (Anything new on the teary eyes from chopping onions?)
The cooker doesn't prep the food for me (alright, I'm looking for robo crock pot).
Conclusion: For a single person, this is an exceptional buy. It also made me focus on more fresh foods in my diet, like spinach salads with Organic Dressing. My first split pea soup was wonderful. This little bugger will get plenty of use.
PS - My sister shipped me Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Recipes for Two: For the Small Slow Cooker as part of the gift. And I'm still not using the stove.
