Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Maxam KT17 17-Piece 9-Element Surgical-Stainless-Steel Waterless Cookware Set

Customer Review: I had my doubts -- but WOW, no more
Summary: 5 Stars

Just got my Maxam 17 piece waterless cookware two days ago and cooked my first meal in them today. I chose to cook Braised Roast Pork Tenderloin with Cabbage and Apples from the cookbook "Healthy Meat and Potatoes" by Charles and David Knight. I had a tough time believing that browning meat without oil or water would work, but I followed the book's (and cookware instruction's) advice and kept the temperature down to medium-high and browned the meat until I was able to move it from it's original "stuck" position (which you will always be able to do if you wait for required length of time to brown), then added the veggies (without water), then added a dome cover and lowered the heat as instructed, then kept the dome on at recommended low temp for time instructed -- WOW, was I surprised. The pork was SO VERY tender and lean and the veggies? GREAT flavor. Very low fat meal with NO SALT ADDED, just a few other spices. Can't wait to use this cookware again. Cleanup was a breeze.. I really think that those who do not appreciate waterless cookware, don't give it a chance by following instructions. You really have to cook on low heat to avoid burning and messy cleanup. This cookware cost me less that the $600 bucks I spent on the Circulon Professional set I bought several years back. I will keep those pieces but plan to rid myself of all other pots and pans I've collected over the years. LOVE THIS COOKWARE!!

Customer Review: Maxam Great Waterless Cookware
Summary: 5 Stars

I am amazed that the cookware is such high quality at a great price. My husband said, I would pay more for good regular cookware. Don't forget you can pan fry without oil also. The cookware is as promised. It is sturdy and cleans easily. A little soapy water and it's clean. The dishwasher works well also. I'm still experimenting with waterless cookware and need more recipes. However, I was surprised it is easy once you understand a few basic principals. They are; it's low heat cooking, most cooking start at medium and then go to low. Of course, the times vary depending on what you are cooking. The demonstration I saw for the very expensive waterless cookware was similar. The results have the same great taste at a lot lower cost. I haven't put any or very little seasonings. The flavor of the food is much richer. The first time I cooked red cabbage I over cooked it. The second time I followed directions carefully and left tiny bit of water at bottom (not required). It had a perfect texture and taste without the seasoning but with the health benefits. I've also cooked fish which I don't think works the best because there was almost no natural oils in the fish I cooked. However, the taste and texture was great. Pan frying is not going to be like the usual oil frying but its healthy. I'm looking for recipes for pan frying fish without oil. I'm working on this one.

Customer Review: Townecraft?
Summary: 5 Stars

I had a Townecraft home demonstation and thought it was wonderful. The salesman was great and really made me excited. Then came the price. I've bought cars for less than that! I started looking around for that same brand on auction sites and found it 1/2 the price, but still very expensive. I went to the waterless cookware site and decided to give Maxam 9 a shot. It took 2 months to get, but the pans are good heavy quality, very easy to clean, and keep the food moist. Waterless cooking, however, takes patience to get right and you are likely to burn some meals if you stick to the time guidelines in the book. I've had them for about two monts now and finally got rid of all of the old teflon and rusty pans...they aren't coming back. I've cooked with the Townecraft pans before and you aren't going to see enough of a difference to warrant 6-8 times the price. Maxam 9 (World's Finest) is almost as good and won't kill your budget. As Zig Ziglar says "It's easier to justify cost once, than apologize for quality forever" The price is more than what you are going to pay in WalMart, but the cost over a lifetime will be much, much lower because you won't buy pans again.

Customer Review: I'm in love with my pots
Summary: 5 Stars

When I saw that this product was on sale for only $200 vs $1500.00 I had to get it. It was a christmas present to myself considering I racked up on the gift cards. When I received the package, the box was heavier than expected. Each pot is pretty heavy and sturdy. When I finally got to use my pots, it cooked very quickly and kept the food hot a lot longer than my old pots. I even tried the egg poacher for the first time...delicious! I never had poached eggs before so, this was a good experience for me. Even though the pots are greaseless and waterless, I still use a little bit of olive oil and water. Upon first use, the pots do discolor a little bit. I read that stainless steel cleaner does shine them right back up; however, I am looking for an alternative cleaner because I don't want to take the risk of poisoning myself. Anyways, these pots are great!

Customer Review: Excellent Cookware -- Good Replacement for now unavailable Tri-Ply Stainless
Summary: 5 Stars

This is fine cookware. It handily replaces old Tri-Ply cookware that was beatup from 40 years of use and a lot of moving. The exterior finish is equivalent and so far the cooking properties are similar. It is heavy, but not quite as bad as cast iron, it does meet its reduced warer claims and is easy to clean.

There is one safety hazard that depending on your care could force this cookware to lose several stars. It is easy to get steam burns from the vent in the lid if one forgets to close the vent before trying to remove it from a pot. Whistle is nice but escaping steam gave some minor burns until caution was learned.

Five stars for the "tea kettle" cookware.
